Re: Case Annealing.

Yes.

In my case, I use an ultrasonic cleaner. Thus, I find by annealing right after cleaning, I also dry the cases too.

You should then resize after the annealing step because the annealing softens the necks making them easier to work. This gives you more consistent neck tension.

I will humbly challenge that notion... My brass will size measurably smaller after annealing. That extra .0005" of neck tension is probably not of any concern at 100 yds. Or even 500. But at 2000 yds. it will most likely show up as vertical. So for some people, it WILL matter.

Re: Case Annealing.

Hi John, care to share your annealing to resizing procedure and timeframe, am going to anneal some 308-243 Lapua brass and necksize with redding comp neck bushing dies, Loads are for 1k shooting thanks, Paul.

Yes Sir. </div></div>

I do the same as these guys. No special tricks. I do spend a lot of time on my brass ahead of time, sorting and prepping. The usual stuff.

As far as the annealing itself, it's very particular to your heat source. The best thing to do would be to get some Tempilaq and put it inside the neck so you can calibrate your procedure.

John

ETA: BTW, I've read that the timeframe between neck sizing and bullet seating will affect neck tension too. If you're really anal about neck tension you may want to resize until just before you seat to control that timeframe

Re: Case Annealing.

Annealed some 4th fired Lapua 308 cases till blue tinge appeared but instead of cooling in water left cases to cool for an hour then neck sized them and noticed that the necks seemed tighter than usual when neck sizing? Is this the case when annealing brass and should the cases be cooled with water to get more uniform working of brass helping to keep neck tension as unifirm as possible or would leaving annealed brass to cool without water give same results, Thanks.

Re: Case Annealing.

paul T, provided you have not annealed past a certain point it wont matter if you dump them in water or leave them to return to room temp.

Just out of curiosity do you use tempilaq to determine when you need to stop? it can be easy to over do it if you havn't done it before.

For the amount of brass I anneal at a time that is way too slow. I also don't want to jack around waiting for cases to dry.

Here are some short videos of a machine I built to do it.
