Those of you who have a Savage or a Rem and have the CDI bottom metal for it with the 223 AI mags... Do you have any play from side to side? I have approximately 1/4 to 3/8 of play from side to side "rattle" and if i set the mag on something while the bolt is in the open position or have my hand placed under it, I cant close the bolt. It catches on the top of the mag ears. Anyone experience this and what are some fixes? Bottom metal might be going back:-(

Re: CDI bottom metal question.

Mine rattles like a loose goose but, works everytime .I tried a coulpe of things to tighten it up but it would not work so, I just put it back and forgot about.

With just about any DBM if you put to much force on the bottom of the mag it is going to cause the bolt to not want to close. Are you saying the magazine has alot of movement or are you saying the DBM itself it moving? If its just the magazine what other magazine fed rifles do you have?

Re: CDI bottom metal question.

Call CDI - he may be able to help you fix it without having to send it in. Might just need mag catch adjusted, which is pretty easy to do.
As far as the looseness, I have found alpha mags are a little more snug in mine. The AICS seem a little loose but work fine.

Re: CDI bottom metal question.

Yup, all my dbm's mags wiggle. I'd rather have it that way. Keeps from having to insert the mag just perfectly to go in. Rounds in the mag and a closed bolt there is enough pressure to keep it from making noise when hunting.

Re: CDI bottom metal question.

As I've stated with my CDI bottom metal(Rem700 SA), I can put my hand on the bottom of the Alpa mag to shoot or rest the mag on something and the bolt still runs and I have no feeding problems. Empty mag, I have play/rattle but loaded the top swells a bit and it takes a couple extra seconds to load a 10rnd mag. I either got lucky or my Gunsmith had something to do with it... I think it's the latter.

Re: CDI bottom metal question.

I have only played with a AICS and a XLR chassis but never had a rifle with after market bottom metal. I have another that im building for someone in a 700 action with CDI and the AI mags seem tighter in it with less movement.

Strangedays, I ment the magazine has a good bit of play.

nfoley, I called Jeff and he is sending me an extended mag catch to solve the "in and out play"

Other than that, the machining is top notch on this thing and Jeff is a great guy to deal with who cares about the customer and his product. Im just checking if these savage's are supposed to have more play than others. Thanks for such quick responses guys.

Re: CDI bottom metal question.

Sounds like the mag catch needs tuned to me. I have had to tune the mag catch on every bottom metal setup I have owned. I only run Cdi now an they have required less tuning than several other systems. It could also be that inlet on the stock is a little deep allowing the mag more entry

A couple of years ago I paid Jeff to inlet a stock for his DBM, I had to return the stock to the mfg this fall for a warranty issue. The stock mfg sent the new stock to Jeff so I could pay him to inlet it. I explained the situation to Jeff and he would not let me pay for the inletting even though it wasn't his fault the stock went south. I had to argue with him to let me pay for the shipping.

Hell of a good guy!
