Has anyone ever mixed colors to make a custom color with success? I have a color I want done that is not offered. My idea is to mix the patriot brown with gold to make a bronze color. Anyone want to tackle this project for me?

Re: Cerakote questions

Yes sir...I mixed a few colors for my recent cerakote project.
I picked up a turkey injection needle that I use to measure mixing amounts. That way I have a record of how much of each one is needed to make a certain color in case I like it, or decide the mix isn't right. The turkey needle is in ounces, so I'm planning to get a different one that is measured in cc's.
I mixed Hidden White with Coyote Tan for the light spots on the rifle. I mixed Highland Green with Coyote tan for a green that wasn't quite so bright. I mixed Federal Brown with Flat Dark Earth to wash out the color a bit, and whenever I mix custom colors and don't use it all, I put it back into an empty cerakote container that has turned a washed out brownish color that I'll be using on a future project for a base coat, that way I won't have to buy a new container just for a base.

Re: Cerakote questions

Hey guys I know this is off topic ... but how do you thin Cerakote? and will normal air brushes work? .. I have some Iwata's

And last question for the Cerakote noob-- where is a good place to order the paint?

Thanks and I am sorry if I hijacked this thread ...

Re: Cerakote questions

There is no reason to thin Cerakote...it's about the consistency of 2% milk. Not quite as thin as water, but more thin than whole milk.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "normal" air brushes, but the on I used to use, had the little jar on the bottom. HATED IT.
The one I use now is all chrome and has a 7cc gravity fed reservoir that works much better.

I have found the best deal on Cerakote to come directly from NICs website. I got the 6 color package that comes with a free HVLP paint gun for like $180 I think. Don't remember what shipping was.

The HVLP gun they supply is great for base coats...but even on the lowest volume setting with only 30psi ... it still comes out VERY FAST. You could do 2 guns in 3 minutes pretty easy...where as it might take you 15-20 minutes if you use an air brush with multiple coats.
