Is this why 99% of all custom build rifles posted on the Hide are based on Remington 700 action?

Path of least resistance.

Almost any rifle can be 1/2 MOA. All of the parts and knowledge for 700s is old school, tried and true, easy to duplicate, simple.

IF a Smith has good tooling and good skills, it can be done.

Also, the HUGE supply of aftermarket parts drives a lot of people to 800s

Just my 2 cents.

Re: Cheap is good, good is cheap.

This is something I ask myself a lot when reading pages on this forum. Why do guys spend 3-6 thousand dollars on a gun when I can buy a Remington 700 or a Savage 10 that will shoot sub .5 moa. Can anyone shed some light on this?

While I'm sure some guys buy $5K sticks just because they can (and more power to 'em), sometimes .5 MOA isn't enough- if you're in serious competition shooting. The quality and tolerances of everything from the barrels, to the actions, are much more precise. At some point the differences, I believe, are too inconsequential to be of significance to mostshooters- but like I said, there are those that can appreciate, and utilize, the precision these high-end rifles afford.

While everyone knows that a top notch triggerman with a "cheaper" but capable rifle can outshoot a tool with an $8,000 rifle all day, everyday, the combination of a perfect rifle, and expert shooter is as good as it gets.

Someday, I hope to be a good enough shooter for it to make sense for me to invest that much in a rifle...

Good point wannashootit. I think for some on here its knowing you got the best that you can afford and knowing when something goes wrong its you and not the rifle. I think there is a lot of people on here who just look at it like a tool and extension of themselves and get what works for them. Kinda like a car you can buy a $10000 Honda that gets you from point A to point B or spend a lot more and get there in better style and more power. Its choices people make and what does or does not work for them when it comes down to it.

I started years ago with a stock 700 VSF with a Mark 4. My latest is a UGSW built Badger M2008 with a SN-3 that better fits me and has what I wanted in a rifle. Am I able to get everything out of the rifle that it is capable of. No I'm not but I like knowing when I miss or groups open up its me and not the rifle. It keeps me honest this way instead of blaming the rifle.
