Check out oil spill solution

Re: Check out oil spill solution

While in FL last week, the local news channel did a bit with two guys that used chipped up dry ice. They sprinkled the dry ice over oil on sand, water, and in grass. The oil hardened and they rolled it up like a fruit roll. Best home-grown idea that I've seen.

Re: Check out oil spill solution

Yeah, it's a nice idea to imagine, but really way oversimplifying things.

Also thanks to the dispersants most of the oil spill is hidden from view and I believe the hope is it will just distribute throughout the ocean, as opposed to having to be cleaned up.

Great plan if you are paying for the cleanup, possibly not so great if you happen to be wherever it all ends up, or you make a living harvesting the seacritters there and it kills them all.

Just like the idea with the using hair, when it becomes saturated with oil and water it will sink.

Throw a bunch of sponges on top of the water! (joke)

It's a good idea, but I would worry about supply, that oil spill is covering a lot of area. If you try to calculate the number of gallons of oil that have been spilled, and calculate how much oil will be soaked up per pound of hay/grass, it's gotta be pretty way up there. I say throw a bunch of solutions at the problem... I'm sure throwing money on top of the water would soak up a bit of oil. The one time that throwing money at the problem would be effective. (also joke)

That's already been tried. The price paid was not worth whatever gains made. A true tragedy. RIP Mr Squarepants.

How about straw, they don't eat that.

It doesn't have to be quality hay. Hay could be bailed from medians and road ditches for this purpose. There is plenty of grass that needs mowing this time of year without taking away from livestock.

Re: Check out oil spill solution

Lunchtime news featured skimmer boat operators who are sitting around waiting for BP to tell them to get to work. Still waiting.

Re: Check out oil spill solution

There are alot of grasses that the livestock doesn't eat that could be used. Even if they just put it along the beaches to catch what comes ashore. Roll it up and burn it in the power plants, sounds good to me....
