I am new here and working on learning to checker gunstocks. I don't want to practice on good gunstocks for the obvious reasons and would like to find old gunstocks to practice on. Is there anyone who has a suggestion on where to find old gunstocks to practice on. Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Any gunshop should have some cracked takeoffs or some junkers they would be willing to let you learn on. In school we made a mock stock and checkered it as a first project. If you ever make it to Austin, I'm certain McBride's has a bunch. Let me know ahead of time and I'll get you some. Otherwise, Joe will try to charge you ;-)

Thanks for the reply. Where did you go to school? I'm going to the Sonoran Desert Institute. It is a correspondence school so might not be the best option but is what is available to me at this time.

The best rifle craftsman I've ever known once told me if you wanted to know how good you were you needed to checker a length of a broom handle. He said if you could do a good job on that you could do a good job on anything.

That would be a good exercise! Full wrap around forends are a pain. So are Win Super Grades with the diamond on top of the wrist. Sure look good when they are done right though.
