Yea and that was 30 years ago. I thought it was something like the line would be 21 years long or something to that effect. They have added more people in the last 30 years than there are USA citizens I believe.

A "prefecture" level city in China, which is considered a medium sized city, like Xi'an, contains 6-8 million people. That is around the population of the New York metro area. Unlike the more self reliant and smaller agrarian based republics in Africa and Central Asia, the current Chinese government cannot afford to lose any of it's foreign investments that they have fought tooth and nail to acquire since the 1980's.

Those are Pattern QCW-05 submachine guns. Qing Chongfeng Weisheng (Light assault gun-suppressed). They are built by Jianshe Machine Tools Co. in Chongqing City beginning in 2004, the same plant which produced the Type-56 SKS that was listed at $299 by Classic Firearms.

QCW pattern weapons are chambered in the 5.8x21mm PLA round. They can be loaded to similar performance as the FN 5.7 cartridge and more, but for their use in this platform, they are subsonic.

9mm Luger variant, for Canada civilian market.

An interesting bit about the 7.62x54R...

That particular round almost phased out of existence except for hunters in Tibet, Manchuria, and Qinghai who are still using Mosin Nagants or falling block and rolling block single shot rifles built by local smiths.

The PLA basically went bullpup configuration in the 1990's with the QBZ-95 series of battle rifles, QCW submachine guns and QBU designated marksmen rifles. The 5.8x42mm is very similar to the 5.56 NATO, though it burned at a substantially higher chamber pressure and hurled 70-grain projectiles downrange at around 3400 FPS.

Recently though, the Ministry of Defense has started experimenting with the PRS platforms and came out with it's own precision bolt action tack driver running on the 7.62x54R cartridge. It is also built in 7.62x39. So this basically means that one of the earliest generation smokeless powder "heavy" cartridges from the late 19th century is still being used today out of new and state of the art delivery systems.

I do a lot of business there. People are really no different there. Everyone tries to make a living and some do better than others.

The big difference is the Politicos at certain levels have a lot of influence over industrialists. Not everyone is a member of the party. It is quite selective and based on achievements and/or familial legacy.

Lots of freaking cash there and lots of abject poverty. The conditions in small cities of less than prefecture status is typically poor. I spend time in many cities where population is much less than a million. Different world especially when you travel 60 miles from that city to where the factory is located.
