I'm looking to buy a nice fixed knife, thinking of a Chris Reeve Green Beret or a Strider MT SS. Do any of you guys own or have held one of these knife's, or have a better recommendation on a good quality knife.

Any info would be good

That's kinda like asking "what's a good car"?

What is the knife for? What tasks will it be used for? What has lead you to both of these brands?

Both have things they excel at, it's just a matter of identifying your needs and wants, best.

My vote it for Chris Reeve. I own 2 of his knives which I use for gutting and skinning deer. I went through 5 deer last year and never had to sharpen the knives.

I send them back to Chris each year for service and sharpening.

Best quality workmanship and service.

You won't go wrong his products.

Chris Reeve, hands down. Unless you plan to use it like a crow bar instead of use it as a knife. Strider fixed blades are good for driving through car doors and breaching, and Chris Reeve knives are good for everything else! I got a Strider DB-L on which the angle of the grind was such that it absolutely could not be sharpened to a cutting edge. Good pizza cutter, but that was it. I've owned 4 of their fixed blades and sold 'em all. Love their style, but if you want a knife that is sharp and can be used to cut instead of break things, then get a Chris Reeve. The only Strider I still want is one of their SLCC models. Those little suckers are cool.

Now, depending on what you are looking for, you might check with Andy of Fiddleback Forge. Google him, it'll come up.

I have had a Chis Reeves Sebenza since 2000 and love it. Chris sold it to me himself and and then modified it to my specs in 2002 in the shop in Boise. I have taken this knife with me all over the world, skinned Moose, Elk, deer, and pigs with it frequently in the back country and is has always held a superior edge.

As for Mad Dog, I am/was a Mad Dog dealer. Kevin (Mad Dog) is an artist but can't seem to manage production. Additionally, I have used his knives on multiple moose and elk kills and they don't hold an edge they way the Sebenza does. Kevin's Panther is probably the most beautiful blade I have ever encountered, but if I need something utilitarian to support me globally the Sebenza is it.

Hey thanks guys for all the reply's.

That's a good demonstration, but who is going to use the knife like that? The average person is not going to beat on it with a sledge hammer.

I'm thinking Chris Reeve's just because he takes care of his costumers and he will sharpen the for life, for free.

You know, sometimes it's embarrassing what some numb nuts are allowed to post and call a "test." That's mindless abuse, and he regards it as a flaw in the knife when it breaks. What a dumbass.

Thanks for posting that. Next time I want to stab through a car door, or chisel wood...I won't use a CR.

What is a good knife to use when you want to stab cars and pound on it like it's a nail?

There is no doubt the two guys are odd, the greasy type to intentionally break the knives and then cash in on the warranty, and do a bunch of things with a knife that one would not normally do.

That all said, they have tested a variety of knives that most of us own. Many folks cry foul b/c of the test and the results. Yet since most of the same things were done to all the knives - kinda hard to say there isn't some legitimate measure of integrity going on.

Some people own knives to collect them. When they sell them they state something to the effect of 'I bought this a few years ago, never sharpened, never used for anything more than opening a letter'. Other folks buy knives and use them to build shelters, making kindling for fires, may actually need to pry something, may actually need to jam it into a crack and stand on it, etc. To those folks - knowing that you can beat the spine with a rock through some blow down is an important bit of information.

On that note, the RAT and the Fallkniven are pretty impressive too.

Like others have said - depends on what you want the knife to do.

Your right....

Nobody, absolutely nobody, actually confronted with living off the land or requiring to survive for an indefinate period of time would waste a precious resource like their knife by doing anything as patently stupid as risking destroying that very same tool by beating the spline of it with a rock until it broke. For that we have king-fu chops.

As for what kind of knife will pass those tests, he does find one that was NOT destroyed by his tests.
