chrono noob - 2917fps with a 308 175smk??

Ok, was running a load thru a borrowed chrono and getting some good numbers from FGMM brass, 175smk, ccibr2 and 45g of varget from a newer lot.

Was getting 2740-2750 with a small ES and then a round recorded 2917 fps - this HAS to be a chrono error right??

No pressure signs on brass. I dont see how I could get a 175 that fast without some. I chalked this up to a bad read and assumed that yall have seen similar results with your chronos.
Anyone??

Yes, some error involved. How close was the chrono to the muzzle? You might be getting muzzle flash in there, or the sunlight is messing with it. If you are shooting a brake, you can be 10' or further. If no brake, you need atleast 12'-15' away.

Ok, thanks Chad. Chrono was at 10 ft. Near some trees so it is also possible shadows/sun from them moved over it (it was windy).
