Gunsmithing Cleaning lug recesses + Otis kit

Hey all. I've been reading up on proper maintenance of lug recess areas. I already have a pretty sizable Otis kit:

Which I use on all my guns. I also have a full size Dewey rod for backup.

Anyway, I noticed there are all sorts of specialized tools to get to the lug recess area, but I was wondering what's the bare minimum, using the tools I already have, that I'd need to purchase to get an adequate cleaning back there.

Seems there are all sorts of deluxe kits like this:

But much of that seems redundant. This seems decent:

But again, without knowing what's necessary, it's tough for me to say.

Thoughts? It would be most helpful if I could get something to clean both my 700 and AR.

Sinclair makes a rod for cleaning the lug area.I use the Tipton set from midway, ten bucks if I recall right, decent kit.

I use No 2 as assembled by Sinclair with a pistol length rod that does not spin. All I have needed. FYI, you will use the cotton rolls more than the felt pads and the rolls are a ALOT cheaper if you buy them from a dental supply place. Those are the same things the Doc shoves in your mouth when doing work!

I have been using that Tipton set also. It works fine, you just have to get the swabs all the way in the holder.

I have a Dewey kit for the AR10. I also use it on the M700.

Hmm, forgive me if this sounds naive here, but in looking back over my kit, I'm wondering- wouldn't I be able to do the exact same thing by just buying the cotton rolls, threading them through one of my slotted tips, screwing that into one of the many-sized rods I have (flexible or rigid), and then just inserting and spinning?

I'm not averse to spending $10 for a Tipton

, I'd just like to minimize unnecessary gear in my bag. Am I missing anything here with that approach?

I just tried one and it did work with a slotted tip for 12ga shot gun. I don't think you could get it through one made for a rifle. Not a bad idea if you already have the shotgun gear.

Yeah, given I have the "Elite" kit or whatever, I have all three sized slotted tips, the 223 one, the "larger" caliber one, and then the larger shotgun one. If you're saying it fits through that, bam, I think I have my solution. Worse comes to worst, I can always buy the special handles later.

You can make a tool like the Tipton using a piece of hardwood dowel. Get a piece larger than the swab, drill a hole through the dowel, cut the dowel where you drilled the hole leaving about 3/4 of the hole. Insert a swab and go at it.

And (having been in the dental field for 45 or more years...when you get the cotton rolls spring for the type that are held together by thread-nets...not the overly compressed rolls. JMHO

Had a guy tell me they could be used in an emegency situation to plug bullet holes. Not that I would, but they've been keeping bleeding women alive for days at a time for many years!
