Got the truck up, fluids drained, drive shafts off, exhaust out, crossmember off, connections disconnected, shifter off, and the fucking E12 bolt on the top left of the AX15 stripped. Bolt #2 coming out. Figured I'd start with them since they're a PITA to begin with being on the top of the transmission and being weirdly shaped nubs. #1 came out after ~115ft lbs of pressure. #2 stripped at about the same point. Punched the fuck out of the sheetmetal when it let go. Glad it wasn't rusty or I'd have busted through and probably needed stitches.

Spent the last couple hours trying to drill that bitch out, but blindly drilling a hole while bear-hugging a transmission is a delicate process, to say the least.

Not a huge setback since the clutch kit hasn't arrived yet anyway...

I want to punch the dude who put E12 bolts on top in the fucking dick.

No penetrating oil gets in there and breaks bolts loose. Once you get it moving, then you can get some worked in there. IMO, 99% of the time spraying down the outside of something with penetrating oil, just serves to make a mess before you start.

What truck uses the ax15 ? A Dakota maybe I'm guessing? I thought that was only used in Jeep's.

PB blaster has worked for me in the past. As far as messes go.. That thing is covered in mud most days out of the year, including this one.

@Huskydriver - Jeeps are trucks.

Another product I have used a lot that works great is YIELD from Chemsearch.
It works better on rust/corroded stuff than anything else I have used and I have used a lot of Kroil etc.
The drawback is availability. It is primarily marketed to industrial type places and sold by a salesman/woman that comes around like the Fuller Brush man.
I don't know if they are even still in business as it has been a few years.
Noting the location, I doubt you could weld a nut onto the fastener but I have done that countless times and as Army Jerry said, Heat is your friend. Good luck.

Welding a nut on was my first thought, but there's just no way to see and work at the same time. I've drilled holes i couldn't see a lot, but never tried welding something i couldn't see.

So... Verdict is...

Clutch still looks pretty good.
Pilot bearing is crunchy as fuck, filled with dirt.
Throwout bearing is crunchy as fuck, too.

RMS probably ought to be replaced.
Need some new U-joints
Need a new boot for the shifter (it was fucked before I ripped it out)
I don't think I'm gonna fix the floorboards JUST yet cuz I've got to go up and do some shooting this weekend, but with the E12 faggotry out of the way, I can yank this tranny off in a few hours next time.
Figured out why I keep having to adjust my E-brake. Fucking bracket is tearing the sheet metal away. That's getting welded up before the tranny goes back in.

Once I got to the bottom of the 'head' portion of that communist bolt, the head ripped off but I still had another 1.2mm or so to go and got tired of trying to drill through grade 8 at a mega-fucked angle.

Then I thought of a way to make myself a liar when I said, "You can't work and see at the same time."

Naturally, I zip-tied a dremel to the end of a PVC pipe and shoved that motherfucker up there to do the job from about 3ft away. That shit worked great. I only miffed the bell housing a little, but not on parts that matter.

Fuckin' cock sucking motherfuckers.

Rock on bro !!!!!!

Those are some mighty big holes in the floor pan.....hehe.

Yeah, it's pretty bad, man. I took the passenger seat out just to discourage people from riding there. Now it's where I keep my toolbox, and motherfuckers still want to ride there on top of that.

Like, goddamn? Don't you realize you might fall the fuck down on the exhaust?

Time to trade it in.

Jeeps never die, just fix or replace as shit breaks or falls off.
Had to pull my front drive shaft off last week and rebuild it, obviously no were near as involved as pulling the tranny but saw no reason to upgrade the whole shaft since the original Rzeppa joint that finally gave up made it 92k miles.

It's really not that involved, man. Especially not when you have a tranny jack.

The only thing that fucked me this time was that a communist bolt lacked integrity. I'll be replacing those with proper American hardware, and will never have to worry about that bullshit ever again.

I still need to pull the rear end out of my wrangler and cut off and reposition the spring perches since I moved it back a little with adjustable control arms to line up the aftermarket driveshaft.
Didn't get around to it last week.

Kudos to anyone willing to do this kind of work, at home, on a modern vehicle!!!!

I've said for years that engineers, before they are allowed to design any vehicle, should spend at least 2 years as a mechanic... fixing them.

Because then, when their little CAD program tells them that it is ok to put a screw behind a cover on top of a transmission... that requires that you remove the tailgate to access it... they will say to themselves "boy, I'd hate to have to fix that."

Well done!!!!

Cheers,

Sirhr

More likely they will say, I am glad I am not going to have to fix that.

There's better examples to bitch about engineers that this.
They probably stabbed the tranny with the engine.
And blaming a Metric bolt is a good outlet for frustration.
Sorry 'bout that The external star is a pain. Ran into that on a Mercedes rear axle.
Had to cut two off. But, I had plenty of room.

A little rust never hurt anyone :) Patch it, good as new.

I love turning wrenches. One day I'll get a hydraulic press and rebuild the tranny. 5th gear probably has some deformities on the teeth judging by the somewhat obnoxious noises it makes. 2nd gear needs some attention, too, because it whines more than I'd like for crawling around looking for sign/something to eat. That may be "normal", but I'd like to get rid of it somehow.

The bonus is I'd get to let my boy play with the gears and stuff. I think he'd shit bricks seeing that.

Today, hopefully, the pilot bearing is coming out, new one going in, and clutch plate/pressure plate are going back on the flywheel. I think I'll let the little guy turn some wrenches on a "real toy" for the first time. Introduce the star pattern and why we do that shit.

Am I the only one that noticed that Q&D said he's going to spend "a few hours yanking off a tranny?" I guess I know where the dirty comes from, but it sounds like he's going to spend his sweet time...

I was wondering when someone was gonna notice that.

Good job (y)
