Does anybody know an approximate value of a sp1 Colt. By serial number it should be a 1978 #sp100XXX. It has the triangle guards, rifle stock, no forward assist or ejection deflector. I was looking into a possible trade. The gun looks to be in very good condition overall. Any information would be appreciated. Also if more info is needed, then please let me know and I'll see what I can do. Thanks Jason

Re: colt sp1

Got any pics? Round count? All original or any modifications?

Pending that information, a rack grade SP1 would be hard pressed to bring $1800 from my observations unless it is a more rare or unusual model or has some special provenance that is well-documented. For a good idea of pricing guidelines, consult GunBroker (do a search for SP1 with completed sales within the last several months and see what they went for). Also, consult ARFCOM for a general price guideline. I haven't seen many at all go for more than $1200-1400 or so in excellent, unmodified condition unless you can find someone behind enemies lines that's looking for a rifle that clearly meets the pre-ban definition and is easily proven as such.

Re: colt sp1

Well I'm not sure on the specifics. The owner stated that he's owned it for 20 years. It appears to be in very good condition, but again I'm not really fimiliar with Colt rifles. I can pick it up for about $1000 and had a mind to flip it, but I'm not sure. I checked gunbrokers sales that had ended and there were several that sold for 1200=1500. I'm not sure if I can save the pics from the email and post em here, but I'll try. Thanks Jason

Re: colt sp1

yes, gunbrokers would give u a better ideal of what one would go for. i've seen them at gun shows run between 12 to as much as 1800, Depends on how bad u wont one.

I'm not going to post the one with the serial number in it, but the number is sp1007XX

Re: colt sp1

Yup...it looks like a rack grade SP1. Again, if it has the box, paperwork, etc., and it is in as good a shape as it appears in the couple photos you posted (and assuming it looks that way inside and out), I don't think that the $1k you would pay is out of line. For purposes of "flipping" it...that is your call, but I wouldn't expect to make a "ton of money" off of flipping it and it could take a while based on how high you price it, but I think it is safe to assume you'll get your money back out of it, plus a little to boot.

As for funshow pricing...that is the LAST place I would look for pricing guidance because the vast majority of pricing I see at shows is highly inflated (based some on "trade" value...based some on people overvaluing their collection items without thought of the market...i.e. - unless you live in a ban state or REALLY want one, why would someone spend $1500 on an SP1 when $1500-$1800 buys one HELL of a modern AR with vastly more than any SP1 could ever offer).

Re: colt sp1

In todays economy, youd be lucky to get 1K for one. I bought one last spring that was made in '67, original owner with box, sling, orig mags and even the unused cleaning kit in the buttstock for 1K.

Re: colt sp1

IMO the only way your going to truly find out how much it's worth is pick a value in the higher end of the range you said you see them selling for, post it and see what offers you get. You can always go down in price but not up. In my part of AZ the ones I see for sale asking price is around $1200.

Re: colt sp1

I'm not 100% sure that I would even want to sell this rifle, pending a trade and actually shooting/handling it. I don't need another AR style rifle, but I've never had a Colt and thought it might be interesting. On the other hand, I'm pretty happy with the bolt gun that I would possibly trade for this rifle. Torn!

While technically, a properly licensed manufacturer can build a f/a in a similar manner to what I THINK you are suggesting, any such "converted" rifle/carbine would NOT be available for private civilian ownership (through the usual class 3 routes, etc.). The only other way that you could take a pre-ban semi-auto and "convert" it to f/a would be through the use of a registered and transferable DIAS unit (through the usual Class 3 routes, plus $10k+++ for the unit itself)!!
