Doing a hike-and-gun soon, and it seems like the most efficient way to carry 6 or 7 Pmags, a normal size water bladder, and some other items/tools would be an Eagle Yote style pack (not sure how big that one is, but the multiple external pocket style is what I mean) in the back with a TAG Gladiator style chest rig up front. Smallish pack with several external pockets and relatively small main compartment with bladder pocket, and a 5 or 6 mag chest rig in front. Don't want a bunch of bulk and pouches on the front, since I'll be carrying a slung rifle, but will need 4 or 5 pistol mag pouches built in or molle'd onto it as well. Just looking for a clean, balanced way to carry a fairly minimalist load.

I've got a good pack, but would have to dig all my mags out of it when I needed one - and I've got the TAG Gladiator that I've used for hog-hunting hikes, but I'd have to molle a bunch of pouches onto the bladder or the front in order to carry more than water and some Pmags. Need a combo!

If a particular pack or company popped into your mind, let me know!

Thanks!

Chainring,

This wouldn't be for the "Bug Out" at Tiger Valley would it? If you do not already have a rig you may want to just get a three day ruck and build you a war belt with mag pouches and butt pack until you see what works for others and what you really need/want. A surplus store should get you set up for the one day event. Do you do a bunch of hunting and other shooting events? Let us know what you end up with and why. An after action report of the run and gun would be great as well.

I'm doing the Pecos Run-n-Gun in about a month. Actually, my sister is doing the Tiger Valley Bug Out Drill, which is more than twice as far! Her AAR is the one that will be interesting!

To this point, I haven't done much in the way of hiking and shooting, but I'm hoping to change that. Trying to get the right equipment the first time!

With a bit more digging this evening, it seems like an Eberlestock Gunrunner (not Gunslinger) pack with it's incorporated scabbard would be the berries if I could just add a chest rig front. This (and most of my shooting requiring a pack) would be mostly hike with a little shoot, so being able to stow the rifle in a scabbard seems like a good idea. Maybe I need to get a sewing machine..

Here's my take on the whole hydration pack/chest harness thing.

If you are going to put it on and live in it (with out needing to get in the pack) something like the BCM-03 is really perfect.

But if you you need to get in the pack, get a separate chest harness, and put the pack on over it. You can have an Eberlestock, and a camelbak, and tailor the pack to the situation.
