Anyone know any scientific info/study on how fast a suppressor cools with and without a cover?

Obviously there is a higher heat retention rate with a thick cover over a thinner cover over no cover.

I talked about it with an engineer discussing whether it would be better to have a cover that slides back over the barrel to let the can cool faster.

He mentioned that a great deal of heat should be moving from the can to the barrel as well.

Thoughts?

I have an Armageddon Gear cover on my Omega. When my barrel gets warm, I take a break and also pull the cover back. The can cools fairly quickly that way. The cover isn't in intimate contact with the barrel, there are fairly large pockets of air between the inside of the cover and the barrel. Granted, I have to believe that everything cools more slowly with a can, with a cover. I've found the cover really does help reduce mirage while shooting. But, the heat is still there and has to be dissipated somehow.

I bought a Miusco 15"x11" silicone dish mat that has long ribs to allow air flow (similar to the Bowers) for about $10.00, cut it to fit and hold it on with rubber bands, hockey tape, etc. Works great, cheap and easy. 1 mat will make 2 covers easily.

Wow! That is genius! If the rubber bands don't melt/break, then the silicone is clearly heat resistant enough.

The deep ribs allowing more airflow is great. Just placed an order for one. I'll be using velcro cinch ties that I use for computer cables.

If you really wanted to know, you could get a cheap heat gun at home depot and run some test. But as most have said, cools quicker with cover removed and bolt open.

Keep posted if you do some testing ;)

Thanks Pineoak! The Velcro straps are a great idea, too!

FWIW, I have also tried using the "As seen on TV" BBQ cooking mats, they are way too slippery and ended up sliding too much with the recoil. As a mirage shield they worked great, though.

The flat silicone baking mats for cookie sheet pans work well as they are not as slippery. They don't have the ribs to allow for rapid cooling, though, they do mitigate mirage well.

As far as cooling the suppressor goes, I would think that new barrel cooling system that uses CO2 would probably be the quickest and most effective if rapid cooling was needed.
