For the police, it's pretty straight forward, somebody called in a report of crime and potential crime and they were told to go there and enforce the law, pretty much going to be cut and dry from the point of the legal system.
Now if you are the normal citizen, there is going to be a question of why were you there?
Why would you be showing up in a bad part of town (presumably not anywhere you live or work at), and be stopping in a parking lot where a bunch of drug dealing is taking place?
The legal system is going to have some questions as to why you were willingly in the area?
Were you going there to buy drugs or engage in illegal acts and things didn't go as you hoped?
Were you out looking for an opportunity to be a vigilante and have fun taking out the trash?
Then it will also come down to the legal system's idea of the rights of police versus citizens and expectations.
If you walk up to a uniformed police officer holding a gun in your hand (even if not pointing at them directly), the legal system is pretty much going to start with the premise (right or wrong) of play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
On the other hand if you have a gun in your hand and walk up to some other citizen and you are not pointing the gun at them, there is a lot more of a grey area that the legal system is going to start looking at and now your lawyer has to argue some points.
I'm not arguing right or wrong just stating the facts.
The legal system is going to treat it differently if uniformed police show up answering a call and start telling folks they assume to be doing criminal things to drop the gun or else as opposed to your average citizen rolling up somewhere and deciding to play criminals vs vigilantes.
Note that in this specific case, it's not about some criminals coming to your house / back alley, this is rolling up on them in a parking lot in a bad section of town where it could reasonably be assumed everyone around is probably connected in some way or other to the activity.
