Hey guys, I've been neck sizing the whole neck but I'm wondering if I should just be sizing down to the seating depth, i.e. not all the way down?

What if any problem am I going to run into by not seating my bullets at least the depth equal to the OD of the bullet (308)?

What's a good soap/whatever to use in an ultrasonic cleaner. My cleaner is a super nice ($1200) little cleaner with heat and all that...

Thanks in advance!

Re: couple of ?'s

No need to size the entire neck, in fact bushing dies usually leave a small amount unsized. I would think this would help seal the neck but this may be crap.

I just got an ultrasonic unit - go search on 6mmBR.com. I used the 50% vinegar followed by backing soda solution (the "cheap and clean" formula). Works just fine.

Most benchrert shooters only size .200 or so. But they don't feed from a mag. The only issue I see with seating that long is durabilty of the rnd. They might be fine if single loading from a box at the range but you'll have problems in other conditions

Re: couple of ?'s

I 'short size' my necks regularly, until the shoulder grows and needs a bump. The way I determine if I've 'shorted' the neck too much is to grasp the bullet between thumb and forefinger and try to twist it around in the neck. If it will budge, the necks need to be sized 'deeper'.

I also doubt the wider portion of the neck will help seal it, but I do believe it will help center it in the chamber. Personally, I have my doubts about the effectiveness of achieving near-perfect concentricity with a case/neck/bullet that simply lies loose in the bottom of a chamber neck that it's sized several thousandths smaller than.

GL, could you explain the "budge" a little more? Do you mean if you can twist the bullet around inside the neck?
