Hunting & Fishing Coyote hunting in Colorado

Re: Coyote hunting in Colorado

When I lived there I had to beg an plead to get people to let me hunt. I eventually gave up.

Seems many don't want ya on their property. It's becoming California like down that a way...

I'd look East of I25

Re: Coyote hunting in Colorado

I go out to pawnee national grasslands. It's wide open so finding cover is a bitch, but you can see em coming for quite a ways. There's also quite a few up the poudre canyon on the state trust lands. And alot of dogs up on buckhorn road near peanock pass. Of course these are just the northern spots I know. You'll have to ask around for spots in the south.

The poudre and buckhorn areas have yeilded large bobcats. I have personally seen a bunch and I was trying to take a shot at one on Monday, but wasn't comfortable with the shot...so that one lived to fight another day.

Good luck.

Re: Coyote hunting in Colorado

welcome to snipershide. Agree with 40gr on the grasslands, or the national forest too. The private is getting harder to get on as many ranchers have had bad experiences with some hunters, but persistance and politeness goes along ways. Lots more public land on the western half of the state.

Re: Coyote hunting in Colorado

I'm surprised you guys are saying you're having problems with private access. I have tons of private access both at the base of the Poudre and all along 14 and 85. I shoot a lot in the Pawnee (below) and have NEVER seen a yote and have only found two good P-Dog ranges.

Re: Coyote hunting in Colorado

I see yotes all the time out at pawnee. Most are early morning and when it's balls cold out. I usually head out Highway 14 east to the pawnee entrance( I think it's 104? ) and head north till I get to 53( these numbers could be reversed) and then head south. There's a small thicket of trees and some rubble from an old homestead out there. Seen a few yotes there everytime I've been there. But the yotes on Pawnee are really skiddish. I'll have to check my gps in my truck and get the exact coordinates.

I duno the road number but I always duck into the Pawnee on the first left (north) after the big curve. Then I go another 20 mins North with a few turns but never see the out there. We may have to meet up and go give them some hell.

Re: Coyote hunting in Colorado

Here is a simple map from the USFS website. http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5188822.pdf

Pawnee is checkerboard, but there are private areas here and there.

I've done some Yote and small game hunting in area number 1, the good thing is shooters rarely set up there, most shooters set up at areas 12 and 13, and area 5 for long range. Dont get me wrong, I shoot steel at pawnee all the time, just that weekend afternoons brings a lot or retards. Idiots shooting North instead of West, and just some unsafe a-holes. Early morn is best.

We will have to get together and go exploit those p-dog towns.

I go way North, well off that map on road 57. I think the purple in 14 is where all the unsafe idiots shoot.

Re: Coyote hunting in Colorado

Here is another map, the FS used to have a larger pdf of this map but took it down from their site. http://coloradobirder.ning.com/page/pawnee-ng-map

Also you guys may know that the State is looking building a recreational shooting area right inside of are 5, http://www.fs.fed.us/nepa/fs-usda-pop.php/?project=33539

Their goal is to round up all of the shooters into one area. The only issue that I see is that the proposed berm is only 100Y. Area 5 has a few tracts with access to hills at 300, 700 and 1000Y. So hopefully they can allocate some land for long range shooting.

I emailed District Ranger Bell last year and asked about hunting in the grasslands after the shooting area was built, and she said that there should be a small buffer area around the shooting area but the rest of PNG should be open for hunting. Then again that was last year.
