I hope this is in the right place. If not i apologize, but i am wanting to build an Ar15 before i go to OSUT in September and i wanted to make it a bit versatile and be able to defend my home with it but make shots at say 3-500m. I'm not sure of the effective range excuse my ignorance on the capabilities of the round im still reading. I am debating between a optic with like a 1x4 or 1x6zoom and ab offset red dot or a aim point, eotech type sight with a magnifier. i was curious as to the personal experiences with such optics you guy/gals may have, and/or the pros and cons or each.

Thanks,
Zac

Re: cqb optics

I'm not a fan of red dots with magnifiers, I prefer a standard scope or an Acog for short to mid range. I'm shooting a Burris Tac30 and like it for 1-600 yds, there are a number of good options depending on your budget and preferences.

Re: cqb optics

I run an EOtech with a magnifier. I like it because at close ranges with the 1x power I don't have to worry about eye relief or getting exactly behind the scope. As long as I see the red dot I can hit something. When you transition to the 3x then you are probably taking a longer shot and need to stable yourself on the gun any way. There are scopes out there with big eye boxes, long eye relief, and crystal clear glass. The problem I have with them is that from the low ready I am faster on a red dot than I am even on a 1x power on a variable scope. I am not worried about scope shadowing and getting the right position behind the scope. With the red dot just bring it up, set your dot on target and squeeze the trigger.

Re: cqb optics

I chose the Leupold HAMR with the delta point on top, I have been nothing but impressed with the ability to go from 25 yards with the delta point to 250 yards with the HAMR, I am an Oregon boy so I always choose Leupold, and it doesnt hurt that I have family that works there, So I do get a little bit of a deal!

Re: cqb optics

The effective range can exceed 1K against paper or steel.

Build two ARs, one with a reddot for defense, plinking, carbine courses, etc, the other with a variable, for range work, hunting, whatever needs longer range or more precision. Asking one to fill both roles will require compromise.

I like EOTechs, they're real fast and simple out to 200. I have a magnifier, I don't like it, it adds weight, eats rail space, made me relocate my optic, the eye relief sucks, and it magnifies the dirt and debris on the EOTech glass, but it does increase effective range, I think it may be the worst compromise.

I haven't decided on a low power variable for my second AR yet but I'm not a whole lot slower with a 4X so it seems a 1 or 1.5X with proper reticle should be really close to reddot speed, but they do require a proper cheekweld. I'm thinking this is the best compromise. If you QD mount it you can pull it off and use your BUIS for household duty, they're more than adequate for engagements under 50'.

I don't like offset sights, tried them on a buddy's, tilting to acquire sight picture is not instinctive for me (a training issue I know), its also more weight (though minimal), more to snag, and something else to worry about dropping the rifle on.

Also I'm not terribly fond of the Vortex reddots but they come with a nifty screw on 2X magnifier.

Its really personal preference and what you're willing to give up, if you can try a few setups, even if all you can do is look thru them in the gunshop atleast you'll have some feel for it.

Re: cqb optics

I second the idea of 2 AR's:

1) 14.5" or 16" carbine with a red dot (eg. Aimpoint T-1) - call it your 0-200 yard carbine

2) 16" or 18" rifle with a 1-4 variable optics with daytime illumination - call it your 50-400 yard rifle

Re: cqb optics

I defend my home with my good ole 870P and G19. 500 meters is a bit out of HD range, IMO. If I used a carbine for HD I would top it off with a Eotech or Aimpoint plus a Surefire and be done. If I had to engage a target past 200yds. I would want a bolt-action.

Personally, I can hit a man size target @ 100yds. with a 12GA. slug. Unless you are talking zombies and TEOTWAWKI, I don't see any need to have to engage any target past 100yds. and that would be pushing it. If I lived in Somalia or on the US/Mexico border I might think differently.YMMV.

Re: cqb optics

Unless I'm forgetting something, I don't think I've shot my carbine out to 500 yards, but I did do 400 with it. It had no problems reaching out there for target shooting.

I'd just go with some flavor of 16" carbine and get two optics in quick detach mounts. A red dot and a 2-10X scope. This is just me, but I often found myself wanting more magnification with a 1-4X scope.

Re: cqb optics

I don't like the 1-4 variables. I prefer an ACOG with fixed 3 or 4 that can be used as. Red dot. I recently bought the 1-6.5 Bushnell. Because I think that's enough range, but it's pricy. Red dot out to 300 and an ACOG will get you to 600, even though wind will challenge you.
