Custom action or not?

So I am sure many others have experienced this as well. I decided to build a myself, started with a 700 22-250 I had sitting in my safe that I never shoot, bought the tools and took it apart. Bought a magpul hunter stock and the plan was to get a remage barrel and put together a nice little rifle. Got talked into a carbonsix barrel, that led me to now order a AG stock. So now the action is seeming not enough for the rifle. My question is, is a custom action really worth it for this build? Or should I find someone to flute the bolt and color the action? Third option, should I get a bluptinted action with a bolt already fluted like pacific tool has cheaper then a full custom action? This was never so pose to be a expensive build. If I do buy a new action for this build then I have a stock and action For another rifle.

I'd either shoot what you have or buy a custom action, nothing in between. You are a lot of money ahead buying a custom action than blue printing an old 700 IME. A blue printed 700 action is still just a 700 action.

I have a Remage build that shoots pretty damn well. Is it as refined and nice as a custom? No. Is it reliable, accurate, and capable of getting the job done? Absolutely. Run what you have and upgrade over time, even if it means buying a custom action and having it sit in the safe for a bit while you get the funds together to finish the build.

You have the 700 action already so use it. Yes customs are nice but 700 actions can shoot just as well. Unless you have the extra $1000 sitting around for a custom action just get it put together with what you have and go have fun.

With the exact same barrel my savage shot just as well as my nucleus.

Of course the Nuke destroyed the savage in all other category's except cost.

Remington 700’s generally are a fair bit nicer than the savages though.

How old was the rifle that you salvaged the action out of ?
If it was prior to the Cerberus / Freedom Group take over, odds are it’s probably good enough for its intended purpose.
There’s always @LongRifles Inc. if you want a tune-up on the action.
Welcome to the rabbit hole...

When you say the action doesn’t seem enough for the build. Are you sitting in your man cave beverage in hand looking at it thinking this? (been there). Or are you noticing qualities of the rifle while using it seeming to be limited by the quality of the action? If it’s built and done personally I’d leave it unless you really feel like it’s holding the rifle up.

No doubt Rem700's and Savages have the capability to shoot. An actions influence on accuracy isn't as much as one would like to think, especially once it's accurarized. Most of the accuracy falls within the barrel and chamber anyways.

An actions main purpose is to insert and extract ammo from the chamber. Savage can barely do that properly. A custom action really pulls away from Remingtons and Savages when it comes to their primary role - to insert and extract cartridges, be a solid base for scope mounting, etc.

Personal choice, either send it to LRI and have them do their magic with trueing and accurization with assorted upgrades you might want and you'll have a Remington 700 that will shoot as it was supposed to shoot because it will finally be done right, or you buy that custom action , whichever brand you prefer and it will be all custom. It all depends on your budget, what upgrades you desire, what custom actions you are looking at, what features you need, want,... you need to compare dollar for dollar and see what fits your budget and what floats your boat. Some years I go with a custom, some years I might go with a factory option like a Bergara, or maybe a Tikka depending on if the house needs repairs, or whatever the family needs; shot Remington 700s long enough in the past to not want any of those unless they are in the class of either a LRI or APO Saber Rem 700 version.

Only problem with a custom action, its extremely hard to go back to a normal rem 700. Seriously I think, if you can swing the custom go for it, and then you will not wonder what if. The more times I do a build, I try to do it right the first time so I don't build it twice.
i agree with that. I have a LRI tuned up 700, but shoot it the least. Once you get used to the feel of a defiance, impact, Mausingfield, etc. it is hard to go back
