I plan on purchasing a Rem 700 PSS in 308, Who do you recommend that can set barrel back 2 threads, cut to 22.75" and recrown that I don't have to wait for months to get rifle back?
If your gonna spend all tha money to have it set back and rechambered you may as well replace the barrel . My advice , which is worth exactly what your gonna pay for it , is to have the factory barrel simply cut and recrowned to whatever length you choose and then shoot the snot out of it . Save the money for when your gonna have the action trued and everything else done .
Agrees with Michael above, with the cost involved just shoot it.
I bought a SPSV last year for a donor action for a 260 build, the rifle shot suprisingly well right out of the box. I did bob the bbl and recrowned and added a Thruster brake with no ill effect. It's true you can not get near the factory throat with mag length OAL but who cares when you can sub moa performance out of it.
R&D (Hateca) used to do his Maverick package which was just that. I wouldn't hesitate to do it if I had a factory tube that shot well, esp a 308.
Lots of folks (myself included) recommend shooting a factory tube out, then going custom, but that's long time with a 308!
I'd recommend to just cut/recrown it as well. Also you don't have to shoot the barrel out completely to get the barrel replaced. Just shoot it enough that your skills come up to a point that you feel you need to upgrade the barrel. Then rebarrel and get the receiver work done.
I don't recommend setting the barrel back and rechambering unless you have a custom barrel with enough room to remove most of the old chamber and bore it straight so the reamer is in direct line with the bore. Problem with setting back a factory barrel is if the chamber is crooked (like most are), the reamer will follow the off set and you benefit little to nothing.
I do recommend the new crown and most charge nothing extra for removing a couple inches before cutting the crown. If I can be off help let me know.
