i have run some dag ammo before in various rifles and it shoots really well and i have the op to shoot stell out to 600 yards and i would like to use this ammo in my gap bolt gun but im worried it would have a negative effect on my barrel becuase the ammo has a nickle coating on the bullets? anyone have any info or advice on shooting this through my gap bolt gun as far as wear or any adverse effects on my barrel

With other proven options available, I have to ask, WHY?

You could start by calling George down at the shop or send him a PM here- username: A10XRIFLE

Re: DAG ammo safe for my bolt gun?

why not? the range here only goes out to 600 yards and i dont want to spend the time and mone yrequired to load match grade ammo to shoot at steel at 600 yards or less. im not one of those guys who goes to the range and shoots 10 rounds and then runs patches thru the rifle for another 4 hours i like to shoot and in a day at the range i can put 2-300 rounds or more down range at the steel so the dag ammo wich shoots very well and is only 85.00 for 200 makes alot of sense for me. i will contact george and get some info from him and maybee give bartlein a call as well. i was just curious if anyone here had first hand knowledge before bothering them

Try running a search on this ammo here (and elsewhere). There are quite a few threads on it and ammo containing cupro-nickel bullets.

I wouldn't shoot it in my rifles, but hey...to each their own.

i tryed to search and nothing came up, and fyi dag is a german nato ammo dated in the mid 90's its 10000x better than wolf or bear and so on.

It sounds like you already decided to use it, its just that you want us to tell you that your rifle.

I own some DAG, in a MWS I could only get 6 MOA out of it. Another shooter had an 8 inch group at 300 yards out of a Savage bolt action. After shooting the DAG ammo I had corrosion on the rifling and on the locking lugs of the MWS.

I recommend against it.

Re: DAG ammo safe for my bolt gun?

The DAG is German surplus ammo. I tried some in my Mauser 98 "sniper" version (1/12twist) and in my Tikka (1/11 twist). It shot minute of barn.

With MEN surplus ammo, also German, I can hold one MOA at 300 meter! Great stuff, since I finished my 600 rounds I'm looking for more. The sources are well dried out.

To the original question: I did not see any negative effects on my rifles. The nickel is there to prevent the copper from corrosion.
Some time ago I shot FNM (Portugese) surplus ammo. Accuracy was about 1,5 to 2 MOA at 100m at best. After about 300 rounds precision went apebooboo. I had serious copper build up in the barrel. After removing with Robla Solo( ammonia based solvent) accuracy went back to normal.

Since then I started reloading. For my Tikka nothing beats Lapua brass and bullets. Usually I use the 170 grs lockbase, great stuff...

Maybe risk ruining your barrel? What sort of savings is there over say, South West's ammo or some of the other "custom" ammo manufacturers here on the Hide? Compared to a new barrel? Doesn't seem worth it to me. To each his own I suppose....
