Daniel Defense 18" S2W Barrel

Re: Daniel Defense 18" S2W Barrel

BCP: I've been leaning towards a WOA 18" SPR barrel... $300 with a matching bolt? Where do you see the barrel with matching bolt for $300? I wouldn't mind going that route at all being that people seem to easily get sub moa results from it.

Drifter_1: Do you have experience with Rainiers barrel? I saw it during my searches and am interested in the UltraMatch Rifle length SPR version but similar to the DD S2W, have seen no reports as to its accuracy.

Re: Daniel Defense 18" S2W Barrel

They used to sell them for 259 with 50 for a matching bolt (NOT full BCG) on the white oak site but that was awhile ago. It's a good barrel not super accurate but just as good or better than other options at that price range. If you want an SPR barrel buy with confidence.

Yes, I have a 16" 5.56 Ultramatch that shoots sub-moa with factory ammo. Also have a 16" Ultramatch 6.8 SPC that shoots incredibly well with handloads, and used another in a build for a friend that shoots equally well. The Ultramatch 6.8 barrel has earned a reputation among 6.8 shooters, which along with my own experience, is what prompted me to try the 5.56 version.

It's my understanding that WOA finishes Shilen blanks to Rainier specs for the Ultramatch barrels.

Re: Daniel Defense 18" S2W Barrel

Rainier Arms Ultramatch barrels are Shilen blanks turned and chambered by White Oak or Compass Lake; that info comes straight form Rainier.

Thanks guys, I think I might try out the Rainier Ultramatch... if not that the WOA.

Too bad I can't find the WOA matching set, i'd go that in an instant for the money savings.

Re: Daniel Defense 18" S2W Barrel

The subject of the DD CHF 18" S2W barrel tested for accuracy with match ammo, and quality magnified optic, seems extremely elusive. These barrels are out of stock everywhere, but nobody seems to have posted results shooting for groups at 100yds with match ammo. Maybe the results are too shameful to share, or maybe they all went straight into the hands of operators. I would like to see the Rainier select barrels with three groove polygonal twist in an 18" config.

Re: Daniel Defense 18" S2W Barrel

The barrels I saw all seemed to be pretty thin. I like Daniel Defense products, the torture test was entertaining and impressive, and I'm sure the barrels are good, but the thin taper has to be in ways performance limiting.

This is my opinion, so it's fully debatable. I just prefer a bit heavier contour for accurate work.

Is the taper supposed to allow it to mimic the performance of a heavier barrel or what is the story behind the S2W contour?

Re: Daniel Defense 18" S2W Barrel

According to DD, they claim the S2W barrel profile was made to be more bull like for increased accuracy. Problem is, I can't find one report of its actual accuracy. While I imagine with every other DD product, it'll be good... or rather great for a chrome lined barrel... I doubt it'll stand up to a good SS barrel.

You found the barrel to be thin?

Re: Daniel Defense 18" S2W Barrel

Midway now lists the 5.56 18" CHF S2W barrel as nitride finished, and states that it is more accurate than the chrome lining process. The Daniel Defense website describes the 5.56 18" CHF S2W barrel as having an outside nitride finish, & being chrome lined in the bore, additionally, the profile looks thicker than before. If the bore is nitrided, I'M GETTING ONE.

Re: Daniel Defense 18" S2W Barrel

I called DD yesterday and they said that the description of the 5.56 18" S2W barrel being chrome line is incorrect. This barrel is entirely nitrided. I know,... there IS no such thing as a partial nitride bath.

I am also a fan of UM barrels.
14.5 UM 556
14.5 M 556 (regular Match not Ultra Match)
16.0 UM 6.8
18.0 UM 308
20.0 UM 308

I have a 20.0 WOA SDM only because I got tired of waiting for their 18.0 UM 556.
Now they have a 20.0 UM 556 just like the WOA but 1/8.

Today I shot a good friend's v11 18" STW. He threw a timney in it and I was really impressed. He just wanted to get a solid zero so I only shot one true group with the rifle. 5 shots of 75gr superformance into a nice little .45" cluster. This was with a 3-18 mk6. I'm looking forward to how this rifle does once we stretch her legs. Needless to say it's shot straight up to #1 on my wish list. I'll update once we get out past 100yds
