What attributes do you look for in a day scope thar make it work well with a thermal clip on?

Where do you want the clip on in relation to the objective kens?

I had read that you want the parallax at infinity but the opposite setting seems to work much better. Also the eye price adjustment seems to affect the image.

I had a k318i and the dreaded nx8 2.5-20f1 side by side with a Utc and got a much better image from the nx8?

Any thoughts from the resident RKIs?

IMO, it doesn't matter much with a thermal clip on since you are just looking at short range at a screen. Matters much more with NV clip ons. But what the fuck do I know. I actually really like the NX8 2.5-20, fwiw.

I don't find the difference between my UTC and 1.5" matters on center, and I find parallax is best around 700 meters, but again, Preston has more experience with this.

I really like the 2.5-20 as well. Lot of bang for buck. Bought one to try with the Tig objective style mounts on my PCP gun.

There’s varying opinions about optical center and how close both day optic and clipon need to be. I have found that it’s always worth testing your offset instead of assuming it won’t work. For example, I have a Hensoldt 3.5-26 in an EraTac 1.65” that isn’t even close to optical center with a UTC but yet it still hits POA/POI. Others have experienced shift from similar offsets with different scopes though.

Like Choid, I’m also of the opinion that NV is more sensitive to offset, Cant and glass quality. That’s been my experience. I believe it all boils down to the prism setup, size, etc, but no way of fully knowing why. Also, tube specs vary and I believe a tubes capability and the housing it’s in are more limiting than the optics that look through it.

All of my setups run 34-36mm except the NF 2.5-20 and I haven’t yet been able to try it out with a clipon.

I have the NX8 on both of my longer range hunting set ups. I get the complaints, but being able to go from 2.5 stalking to 20 shooting between ridges, and with that little weight, makes up for a lot of shortcomings.

Scan with Thermal. (Hand held Zeus)
    Shoot with N/V. PVS - 30)
    Illuminate if required. LN-ELIR-3
The above system is still in service and solid.

For use with the UTC/x/xii I want the low power magnification on the day scope to be under 2.7x then I'm not clipping the corners on the thermal display. Now 3x works, though you might be giving up a tiny bit, but these days, my go to day scope for bolt guns, is the wonderful NX8 2.5-20x T3 :D

I want the clipon in front of the objective end with the occular end of the clipon facing towards the day scope :D :D :D
As to the actual distance, closer is supposed to be better, but it works if farther out (if we're talking UTC/x/xii)

Parallax, I'd say adjust it. But yes, the theory is infinity, but I adjust it, depending on the thermal clipon.

I've never tried the dreaded K318i myself. On my bolt guns I have the wonderful L&S mk6 3-18x T3 and the wonderful NX8 2.5-20x T3 and they both work great. If I was getting another bolt gun scope today it will be one of the wonderful NX8 2.5-20x T3s :)

For stoner rifle (barrels 18-20 inches) scopes I have the wonderfuls:

    NXS 2.5-10x MIL-R
VO pst g2 2-10x EBR4 (slightly less than wonderful, as its longer and heavier than the others and tunnels from 3x down to 2x, but I like to try everything under $1k that might be wonderful, so I'm trying it.
Trijicon Credo 2-10x MRAD (just getting one of these, expecting it to be wonderful)
    L&S mk4 2.5-8x TMR (wonderful !)

Also looked at NX8 1-8x Mil (over $1k)
    VO rzr g3 1-10x MOA (over $1k)
    Credo 1-8x mil (over $1k)

Ha. The excellent Kahles k318i and the wonderful NX8 2.5-20 make up the backbone of my stable of scopes. Both girls are very pretty.
