Gunsmithing DBM inletting

Re: DBM inletting

Try searching, there's atleast one thread about this, concensous among those who attempted it seemed to be that unless you have allot of free time or the right equipment, its worth the small price to have it done by someone with experience and a mill.

In a McMillan, it's a PITA. Carbon fiber, maybe not so much but, still a pain.

HS Precision, B&C or the like or Laminated, no way in hell I'd try it.

It's on a HS precision so I'll just pay to have it done. It will be a while before I can afford to get dbm. I might as well pay a little more and have it done right so I don't mess up a 300 dollar stock.

I love doing things myself and did quite a bit of research on how to inlet a stock. I've done a lot of work on wood stocks and was fairly confident but, bottomline, I don't have the proper equipment to do a professional job and really didn't want to have feeding issues and a messed up stock in order to save some money. I ended up sending my H&S precision stock off to have a professional do it, it's money well spent..

Re: DBM inletting

I did one on a SPS varmint stock, it is only worth 25$ so you cannot logically pay to have it done, jb weld filled in the gaps and I ended up permanently epoxying the DBM into the stock to stiffen it up, cut off 4" from the forearm, opened the barrel channel and added 2" to the LOP, now it fits me and functions well

Re: DBM inletting

I tried it on a B&C stock everything went fine until I got to the aluminum and then I gave up. I am probably going to send it out to get milled since a $1oo-$125 seems like a good deal to have the stock milled. Keith do you guys inlet for the Atlasworx bottom metal?

Re: DBM inletting

I cant say enough good things about Hoopers DBM, dropped into my Manners BDL with just a little bit of fitting to the stock mag well interior. Didnt have to alter the footprint at all!

To date I have used Badger,APA and the Hooper. All are about equal in regards to quality of construction but for converting from BDL to a DBM the nod in my book goes to Hooper Ord. The Hooper also came with two different mag latches, one that had the familiar tab that hangs down and the other has the internal (to the trigger guard) release like on the APA.

Should state I have not tried the CDI because I couldnt find one for a Long Action.

At the moment we're only taking in seekins, Surgeon, or Badger bottom metals and will only install them into Mcmillan or Manners stocks.

Re: DBM inletting

Now you see what I went through last year and this spring as I was waiting for my crew to get the training under there belt on all the new machines we purchased, at one time I got way behined and thought I would never get caught up. We are now getting back to the 3-5 weeks lead time on most Reamers and Gauges. I told Jake to give you a call as he has five 338 CIP stocks for you to do. He will call friday or next week. Thanks Dave
