I've been a rifle for shooting steel at 1000 yards with, long term goal it to get to 1760 yards. I debated on buying a 50 bmg since one day they may become hard to get, but can't find one with the accuracy I'm looking for (keep in mind I'm going based on internet reviews). If I go with a 50 I'm looking at bolt action, not single shots.
I've also toyed with the idea of a 308 or 338 lapua, 308 for ammo availability and 338 for longer range. As for brands; accuracy international, GAP, Surgeon, barrett, DTA, and mcmillan are top of the list. Accuracy international 50 is out of my price range, otherwise I wouldn't be posting this. I'm hoping to keep it under $5000, but $7000 is my max for rifle only.
I've also consdered 7mm wsm and 6.5 creedmoor but have no experience with them.

Would recoomend 338lm. Definitely will reach 1 mile consistently. Look at the for sale section, i have one for sale .lol. Honestly, i shoot more of my 338lm than my 50 BMG

I'm not 100% ready to buy one now, I tore my laburm in my right shoulder and have a meeting with a shoulder surgeon next week. Hopefully surgery is not needed so the buy will not be delayed.

Re: Decisions decisions...too many brands and calibers

338LM will get you out to a mile nicely. The 7s can do it too, but not with the consistency and reliability as the 338. Also, the 338 does a mile a lot more "moderately" than a 50. 50s are pretty much unreasonable in almost all regards. I really wanted to get a 50, but just simply could not justify it:

1. Very few ranges will let you use it
2. Essentially no GOOD factory ammo available for it - that is consistent enough to reach out with
3. No conventional reloading equipment will load 50

The 338 addresses all of these issues. The 408 is another choice - but more expensive (a lot, in all ways) than 338, and only provides a SMALL advantage for your purposes.

Shooting 5$ bills makes me cringe but i'm eventually going to do it anyway

I say AI .338 as i just love the round. If you have the money

Shoulder injury, If it's your shooting shoulder, a good 223 with a brake is what the future holds for you.

Might look into the TRG, but honestly, shoulder issues may put a damper on what you can use, talk to the doc, good luck.

Re: Decisions decisions...too many brands and calibers

It is my shooting shoulder. I have a 7mm wsm for hunting and am using it on the injured shoulder with no problem. Recoil is no issue. Its more of a stability in the joint problem.

Re: Decisions decisions...too many brands and calibers

AI .338 Or if you have a problem with recoil do to sholder.Look at the same in .308win. Good luck.

Contact Tom Sarver and ask him about this "HULK" calibers. With your price range it would be right up your ally and I've watched him hit a rock at 2400yards the size of a 5gal bucket over and over again.

Just do a google search for "Thunder Valley Precision" and tell him Merritt sent ya to talk to him about the "HULKS"

Good luck,
Merritt
