I ahve a Kimber LPT in 308 that has an extremely long throat. I loaded up some 150 gr FMJ bulk/junk bullets for fireforming and can not even touch the lands with the bullet seated .2". That long and the cartridge will not fit magazine nor will it eject throught the ejection/loading port.

I have no interest in getting these bullets to work (1.5 MOA with hand sorted virgin Lapua brass, CCI BR primers, hand sorted bullets by .1gr and every powder charge weighed by hand), but I need to find a suitable bullet for a long throat. Am I thinking right that a bullet with a shorter length and a longer bearing surface will work best? I am new to the whole ogive stuff, at least as far as secant vs tangent, but don't know what bulletts are which one. What abou FB bullets? Someone mentioned trying Lapua Scenars, maybe their lockbase bullets as well.

I already know that I am going to work up a load for Barnes TSX/TTSX for hunting, but still need a paper puncher round for 100yd BR.

Any ideas?????

I shot a Rem700 VS 308 in Factory Class score for a while and it had a Linda Loveace throat as well. I single feed my rounds loaded at 2.900"+ with 175SMK's and rocked on. 42.5 grains of H4895 was the flavor of the day and lit with CCIBR2s' in Lapua Brass. The 175's were still jumping but shot great.

Something like 11 or 12 factory shooters. I don't know who won, but I know I placed second (from the bottom). I am having fits with this damn Kimber. Going to Bo's house tomorrow and he is going to help me measure the throat and COAL for some other bullets I have as well as help me set up my new Wilson dies for the XR. I have a friend who wants to come shoot and will probably let him run the XR next month and I will give the .308 another go around. Rommie(?) brought his 338Lapua and shot it today. Boy am I glad I was relay 1 and he was relay 2. I think his best group was a .307. Not bad at all. Almost makes me wants to take the 30-378 out of mothballs and shoot it next month. Almost, but not quite.

Hope to see you next month,
Rocky

Bullets dont necessarily have to reach the lands to be accurate. I have a Schneider on a T2k that jumps 155smks well over .100 but they dont care one bit. Most factory guns are going to have longer throats most of the time.

If you are using cheap FMJ junk, its going to shoot like junk whether or not you get to the lands. Garbage in, garbage out.
