For the first 1500 rounds of a custom build I've mostly single fed rounds. (Primarily because they've always been clumsy to magazine feed.)

I had my smith look at my feeding problems and he "tuned" the magazine feed lips to see if it improved. It hasn't. The problem is, after a round or two, invariably one will get caught, jammed below the feed ramp against the action and fail to chamber unless I re-seat it. While at the shop, we tried a pMag and Alpha mag, but neither fit properly in the mag well.

Also, if I look into the mag well, it almost looks like the action sits an 1/8” inside the forward part of the mag well. The bottom of the action where the rounds move up and into is not flush with the stock cutout. Don’t know if that’s normal.

It looks like a following round is being shoved forward, maybe while chambering the previous round?

It’s a Defiance Deviant bedded in a Manners T6A stock with Hawkins DBM.

I also ordered a new Alpha 10 round mag and the first round sits angled nose down and very difficult to feed. Can’t even attempt to chamber the second round.

Anyone have any idea what is causing this?

Thanks

Machining a small notch into the feed ramp would alleviate the issue and you should then be able to utilize the full length that your magazine allows.

That may not be the answer your looking for but I have had similar issues.

Thanks.

He mentioned possibly mailing the feed ramp; but that doesn’t explain why 2 other AICS type mags don’t fit and the Alpha mag, when inserted, seems to have the rounds sitting with the nose pointing straight into the ledge below the feed ramp.

Is it an issue with the Defiance action, the mag well, bottom metal, the bedding or something else?

Seems like I shouldn’t have to mill a new action.

Thanks.

It is fairly common to have to mill a small amount on the feed ramp of some actions to prevent the issues your seeing. I had a similar concern a few months ago regarding the Kelbly action I'm using for the build I'm currently working on but it appears that the stock and bottom metal combination I'm using will be damn near perfect with the orientation to the magazine and feed ramp.

There are just to many variables with different actions, bottom metals and stocks for all to be exactly the way we want them.

If you suspect there may be an issue with the bottom metal being slightly out of spec maybe try a different one to rule that out and in regards the Alpha mag it sounds like you just need to adjust the feed lips a little.
