Would this gauge work to measure the bore of a rifle to check the diameter of the bore?

Looking for a way to measure the bore on surplus rifles. Like to get another M91/30 with a tighter bore. Would the tool work to measure the bore?

Hi,

No it would not work, the contact points would not fit between the lands, it could measure the minor bore diameter but not the major.

Gages used by barrel makers use captured balls that can fit into the grooves to check the diameters.

Is such gage available to the public at a reasonable price?

They are a special order item and not cheap $400+, also you need to buy a ring gage to set/check it and they do not have a very large range, maybe about .012-.015

You can push a lead soft lead slug through the bore and mic the slug to determine the bore dia.
