Relative to Dial Ins (i.e. 1.25 up at 200 yds): If I work out my bullet drops using a 15X scope and then switch out to a 10X scope, will my dial ins remain the same? I ask because I recently attended a school and used a buddy's NF 15X optic. Now I am switching back to a NF 10X. Both are 1/4 minute clicks. Do I need to re-figure all of my dope or does it stay the same?

How about for Mil hold overs? Do they stay the same or are they different at the different magnifications?

Re: Dial in/Hold Over at diff magnification

Assuming the scopes all adjust accurately and use the same units (MOA vs. IPHY), a MOA is a MOA is a MOA and a mil is a mil is a mil. It's an angle. It doesn't change.

It would be a real bitch for everyone out there using variable power scopes.

I guess the one confusing issue is hold over on a second focal plane scope where the reticle only has the stated values at a given power. However, your dope doesn't change for other powers, the reticle just isn't accurate at other powers.

Re: Dial in/Hold Over at diff magnification

Provided your click values are the same then no. Your bullets ballistics don't change just based on what scope you sit on top of it. However remember that unless your scope is FFP then what magnification your set at will change things.

Re: Dial in/Hold Over at diff magnification

For an SFP scope only the reticle measurements are affected by magnification. Your dope and turret adjustments don't change. The dot 1 mil (or 1 MOA) away from the crosshair just ceases to be 1 mil (or 1 MOA) away from the crosshair when you change the power.

You will be fine.

worst case is a click or two off.

The mil-holds should not change. Just go shoot the dialed on DOPE confirm it and then divide by 3.438 to get the holds.

Re: Dial in/Hold Over at diff magnification

Guys, thanks all for the information. I kind of suspected that the laws of physics didn't change based on magnification but I just wasn't sure. I am new to the whole concept of long range shooting since I was trained as an assaulter/medic. This is something I am just getting into and your responses are greatly appreciated.

Am I correct in saying that NightForce scopes are First Focal Plane and don't change based on magnification?

Re: Dial in/Hold Over at diff magnification

OH. SO my dial ins will still work but my hold overs will change? Or will the hold overs still work but only at 10X? Sorry for sounding stupid on this but, again, it is all new to me.

No,

Stop, back away from the sandbox and enjoy the lolly pop

Check it out.

do not over think, or take away, or add to it.

The riflescope you got needs to be ZERO'ed.

Do that. Take the data you have from the class and shoot it at distance. Once that is done and you write down the correct dial on dope. Divide it by 3.438 you now will have your hold data.
