For a while, I have been seeing the sale that happens a few times a year. The deal is a Remington 700 for $499 with an additional $50 back as a mail-in rebate.

So, I decided to go for it. While at the counter, I tested the float of the barrel with a dollar bill. The bill didn't even make it into the channel at all. But, I wanted to see what it would do.

I headed straight to the range. Because of hunting season, I was unable to get a spot on the 100 yard line. I went to the 50 yard line instead. My first couple of shots were low and right. After an adjustment, I was in the close scoring rings.

I shot about six five-shot groups. The last three were with Hornady 55 fmjs over 25.0 of H335. The resulting groups were 0.752, 0.752 and 0.894 MOA.

I used the included 4-12x scope, a Harris bipod, and a rear bag. I am very pleased with the results.

I wanted a rifle that I can use to practice at my local range. We have an indoor 100m range. I cannot see going there with my larger rifles, and I get bored with the 22s.

I am very pleased with the results. I plan to see exactly how heavy a bullet this rifle will stabilize.

I had a Bushnell 10x fixed to put on it, but I wanted to test as is. It actually worked pretty well as is. I will upgrade the scope soon. The stock will probably just get hollowed enough to float.

the webbing in the forearm my experience not strong enuff just for sanding for floating barrel youll have to strengthening the webbing for full float, also the recoil lug fits sloppy and allows for play. probably not so much in the smaller cal. but noticeable on the 308 id check out a set of youtube videos we on the hide have in out smithing section

its a little ling but goes over the varmint

Re: Dick's Sporting Goods Remington 223

My experience with the Remington M700 223 (VLS model) is that the stock has an intentional pressure pad at/near the front of the barrel channel.

I strongly advise you not to alter it. The rifle usually shoots better with the pad than without it.

Removing mine was a dismal experience that could not be resolved until it was replaced. Never mess with success.

You can test the rifle without the pad, and without altering the pad. Place shims between the receiver and stock to temporarily jack the action up so the barrel pad contact disappears. I think you will be glad you didn't remove the pad.

The varmint barrels tend to have a 1:12" twist, and I would stick with 55gr and lighter bullet weights. SRA 52SMK and 27.5gr W748. The Nosler 50 (26.5gr W748)and 55gr (25.4gr W748) Ballistic Tips also like that barrel.

AR-180,

I did the same thing, but in .308. I, too, noticed the barrel wasn't free floated so I took the stock over to my oscillating drum sander an made it so. 1/2 MOA grouping, sometimes better.

Put on a Vortex Viper PST 6-24 FFP, Jewell trigger, B&C Medalist A-5 stock and am very, very satisfied with its performance.

Got some stock bottom metal from someone going with a DMB for next to nothing. Sold the scope and stock for $50 each. That, coupled with the $50 rebate gave me a #350 basic platform.

I'm happy . . .

This is how the rifle did in a quick test at 100. I plan to shoot more groups soon. So far, I continue to be impressed.

Re: Dick's Sporting Goods Remington 223

I liked the 223 enough that I added a 308 to the stable. It shoots as well or better than the 223. So far, it is in the original stock. I have shot it out to 200, and it stays sub-moa. I recently got a deal on an HS Precision stock. So, the 308 will get upgraded first. If it shoots better, I may upgrade to a chassis and move the 223 to the HS Precision.

Re: Dick's Sporting Goods Remington 223

Bought the 223 last night. I had been looking for a 223 SPS Tactical (or something similar) to go with my 308. at $150 less and with the longer barrel I considered it a steal.
It's great to see I didn't make a grave error in judgement.
Thanks for your range report AR-180

Re: Dick's Sporting Goods Remington 223

Did my doughter's rifle using one(she is now 11). It shoots great, I just changed the stock until she gets a little older. Then it will probably get re-barreled. I'll get some pics up this weekend.

Good Buy!

Re: Dick's Sporting Goods Remington 223

I have the same 223, I dropped it in a HS stock and it loves any bullet under 55gn. It consistently shoots under .5 moa. With Hornady 40gn Vmax bullets over 26.5gn varget .010 off lands I shoot around .3 to .4 moa. I will take some pics of the targets to proove it. I paid $450 for it from Dicks and got a $50 MIR.

I just picked up a 22-250 SPS Varmint Package w/scope for $350. For shits and giggles I took it to the range and with cheap Winchester 55gn HP It shot under an inch. I am looking for a new stock right now, and I have a Bushnell 6-24 mil-dot I am putting on top. With some good handload I am hoping to be at .5moa with this one too.

Here is my Doughter's rifle. It's a Dick's Sporting Goods Special finished at 18" with a Tactical knob, Refinished in Black Moly, Rifle Basix trigger and McMillan adjustable LOP Stock. My doughter is shooting it under 1 moa with the 52 Hornady A-max - she is 11.
