Did I over anneal my brass?

I took my 7mm Remington Magnum cases to a friend's to anneal. We are both new to annealing and did not realize at the time that it was possible to over anneal cases. We did know to only anneal the necks, so I was careful with what part of the case the torch hit. This was on a Mike's annealer, and I had them set to run at a very slow setting. I do not recall the color of the flame after hitting the brass and there was only very light discoloration on the brass (not nearly as prevalent as Lapua brass).

I didn't think it was a big deal until I went to shoot them yesterday. I am mindful of where the fouling on the case goes to due to desire to headspace off shoulder instead of the belt. Prior to Annealing, all powder fouling was limited to the necks of the case. The annealed rounds however had fouling past the necks into the shoulder.

Did I somehow over anneal? This also seems indicative of brass being too hard, which also doesn't make sense to me. I'm concerned because this is 7mm Nosler brass which is out of stock everywhere and I have a match on Saturday.

How many firings on the brass before you annealed? I would guess they were at the point of work hardening and you did not anneal to temp so they are still at the work hardened state. If you fired them already I would just anneal again to the correct temperature. You did not damage your brass.

I use the thumb nail test to obtain the right amount of brass hardness: anneal the case, then try to dent the case mouth using your thumb nail. As you do this you will see your thumb nail give. The case mouth should also give a little and lose its circle form to form a straight line. That's the right amount.

We have no idea the amount of movement his dies are inflicting on his brass. Most off the shelf will beat it up pretty good if his chamber neck is on the + side of spec. To the OP, any fire formed neck diameter? Necked down diameter without the expander ball installed?

I had sent this brass to my smith so he could choose the reamer for it. He said the chamber was .001" off the shoulder. All my brass is loaded right now so I can't get a neck measurement, but will after firing this weekend.

I did not use the expander whenever I resized.

Rounds are on the hotter side. 71.90 grains under a 180 ELDM. Loaded to 3.490". Not a compressed load but getting there.
