Is it just the quick lock barrel change system, the side cut away magazine well and the way the stock folds?

What are the advantages to the AX family that makes it cost more than the AT?

AX has a different buttstock and a tube with a bunch of rails... and costs twice as much. That's pretty much it.

The cost difference between a folding stock AT in .308 w/muzzle brake and the AX308 is approximately $2294. Apples to apples, thats the cost difference.

To cost TWICE as much you would have to compare the price of the FIXED stock AT in .308 with Plain muzzle to the AXMC in .338LM. That would put you at a cost difference of exactly $3912, and hardly worthy of an appropriate comparison.

If paying the money for the AX doesn't make sense, you don't have to buy it, just get the AT and you'll be just as happy.

ETA: Having shot on an AX chassis, the cut out magwell is very handy for low prone mag changes and mag changes in general. The stock is tool-less quick adjustments, and the forearm is modular. I wouldn't be satisfied with the AT so I needed to step up and pay to play, just this one time.

Regular ax and axmc goes up to 338lm. AT does not go up to 338lm. Ax has fix barrel. I feel it is more accurate as you are not swapping barrel all the time.

All of the new AI's have the quick change barrel, I'm not sure what people don't get about that. The barrel change system won't affect accuracy in the least bit, AI would have gone back to the drawing board if it did.

What's to stop someone from buying the AT & putting it in a AX chassis?

AI most likely won't sell you the chassis and if they will it will probably be at least as much as the cost difference or more. The bonding also makes the action a pain in the dick to separate from what I'm told. You probably also wouldn't be able to buy the R700 chassis and machine it and even if you could there's really no resale value to a AT chassis for the AI action so you'd be eating the $1400 for the stock, plus machining, plus dealing with the bonded action.

If the AX is what you want then buy it from the start.

To redneckbmxer24,
I am not concerning ai quick change barrel system. I am concern about the human error when using the quick change barrel. When you screw in the barrel, you use a Allen wrench to secure the barrel from the sh first look of ai at video. How can you be sure that you put exactly same force/torque so the barrel is at same location every time? I would have more confident if ai supply a torque wrench or a tool to ensure the same force is applied.
This is just my clarification.

The screw just tightens the action to clamp the barrel in it. It just needs to be snugged with a design like that, not consistently torqued. You're not torquing the barrel to the action with the screw, only snugging the action so the barrel doesn't back out.

Thanks redneckbmxer.

I had my heart set on the AX but if it has an identical action and identical barrels I’m starting to lean towards the AT. I have just got to figure out if the price difference is worth the difference in the chassis.

Also is the AT 308 Win barrel available at 26’’ (I could only find listed 24’’)?

Cheers

If you think you would like the AX style chassis over the standard you can always buy a older AX. You won't get the new butt and the quick change barrel but it's not the end of the world. You can pick them up used for about the same cost as a new AT.

Right now the AT's only come with 20" or 24" but you can put on any AW/AX barrel. I'm not sure if AI offers a 26" 308 but I would call the headquarters to ask. I'm sure they could have Dave Tooley make whatever you desire, or one of the many smiths can do it as well with just a phone call. You really don't need 26" for 308 with a match grade barrel though, 24" is more than fast enough. My 24" LW's (same as the AT's are shipping with) on my old AW and AE both ran 3000-3050FPS with 155gr scenars and the 24" bartlein on my AX is getting over 2700 with 185gr Bergers as well as my friend with the same rifle/barrel.
