I found an old remington 722, 300 savage today, the receiver is clip slotted, and is is a 6 digit ser#. what would the difference be between this and a 700 action. If it's all the same but the number stamped on the side, I'll buy it, the whole thing was 400.00(asking price) good, bad or what?

Re: differences between rem 722 & 700?

I have one of those in that exact caliber that has killed more shit than smallpox. I grew up on a farm and we got damage permits every year and that was my "killing" rifle. Basically a plain jane hanfitted model 700,many parts may interchange but I doubt they all would.

Great rifle in a great caliber. I would buy another unmolested one for $400 everyday, although I bet the blue book says thats about the right price.

All parts are interchangable. The only real difference is that the slot was cut in the side of the right lug and added the ridge to the receiver so the bolt would (hopefully) not bind as much.

Re: differences between rem 722 & 700?

thanks for the info, I called the shop that has the rifle, I can pick it up for 250-275, out the door. shouldn't be to bad for a short action with a decent trigger and a clip slot.

Re: differences between rem 722 & 700?

It IS NOT technically clip slotted. It has the rear bridge machined so a clip slot guide could be screwed to rear bridge, big difference!

700 trigger safety levers will not clear the side of the tang on a 722/721. You would need to remove safety lever or remove metal from right side of tang.

The anti bind rail was added to the 700 in the early 70's when they went to the A prefix serial numbers. Also rear bridge height is .017 lower on the 722 and early 700's so most current production bases may have issues without shimming or bedding. Ebay just sold a NIB Redfield 722 base for 102.50 last week and another used one with rings yesterday for $76 and change.

Biggest issue is finding an extractor should original go bad. Remington made another run in late 80's to early 90's but they were quickly soaked up by smiths and parts houses. It is a snap in type but completely different than the current snap in. The small bolt face are easier to find, I actually have some but the standards will fetch as much as $90 I have seen on Gunbroker etc.

The slot in the bridge of the 721/722/early 700's will not allow loading with a clip, nor will it allow a screw on clip guide to work either. All of the ones I have measured are .540" wide. A clip slot must be at least .575" wide to accept either Springfield 1903 or 7.62 Nato style clips, and position the clip just above the magazine box.
I cut clip slots in Remingtons and Winchesters for NRA highpower shooters, and the 722's I have done need to be opened up to function as clip slots. The depth of the cut, at the bolt face of an open bolt, is in the right place. The Remington drawing that has been posted here in a few threads shows the .540" "choke" and the rear of the slot opens up to .580". Springfields and Winchesters are .575"-.580" the complete length of the slot. The USMC/Unertl mounts that I have measured are .540" at the clip slot area.
Why the lug on the mount is .540" at the slot, and not full width (.580")is anyones guess. Also, the relief cuts on the sides of the slot should be at the proper angle to eject the empty clip when the operator closes the bolt. The restriction at the front of the Remington slot doesn't allow this. I have seen some slots on actions that had the side relief cuts, but the slot was only .540" to fit the mount. Worthless for loading.
Wonder what they were thinking?

Re: differences between rem 722 & 700?

Now that you bring this back up I certainly believe what you are saying about dimensions. The reason I made my statement about an adapter is numerous yrs ago some business listed an adapter that attached using the 2 rear bridge screws and extended forward. The pic showed a stripper clip with ammo in position ready to load into mag.

What the pic never showed or I never checked on was whether or not the receiver had to be modified to use it???? Seems like price was in the $30ish range? Did they by chance make a different stripper clip to use with this or am I dreaming about the whole shabang????? Be Nice!
