The slot in the bridge of the 721/722/early 700's will not allow loading with a clip, nor will it allow a screw on clip guide to work either. All of the ones I have measured are .540" wide. A clip slot must be at least .575" wide to accept either Springfield 1903 or 7.62 Nato style clips, and position the clip just above the magazine box.
I cut clip slots in Remingtons and Winchesters for NRA highpower shooters, and the 722's I have done need to be opened up to function as clip slots. The depth of the cut, at the bolt face of an open bolt, is in the right place. The Remington drawing that has been posted here in a few threads shows the .540" "choke" and the rear of the slot opens up to .580". Springfields and Winchesters are .575"-.580" the complete length of the slot. The USMC/Unertl mounts that I have measured are .540" at the clip slot area.
Why the lug on the mount is .540" at the slot, and not full width (.580")is anyones guess. Also, the relief cuts on the sides of the slot should be at the proper angle to eject the empty clip when the operator closes the bolt. The restriction at the front of the Remington slot doesn't allow this. I have seen some slots on actions that had the side relief cuts, but the slot was only .540" to fit the mount. Worthless for loading.
Wonder what they were thinking?
