doctor zhivago

My parents took me with them to the local premier of Doctor Zhivago when I was 7 years old. That was back when people still got dressed up to go to the movies. Besides the discomfort of having to wear my Sunday-go-to-church suit in the middle of the week, I recall the movie being mostly pretty boring, but occasionally punctuated with moments that were a bit disturbing to my gentle sensitivities. Watching weekly episodes of the Andy Griffith Show hadn't prepared my young mind for Pasternak's grim story. Since that first exposure, I've seen it as an adult a few times and it's pretty obvious that Doctor Zhivago is a tragedy, not a romance: under communism, nobody lives "happily ever after".
