Dot Drill modified target. Your thoughts??????

Hey guys,
The other day I was shooting the dot drill. At the end of the day I was looking at the target trying to figure out any consistancy issues. As a result what I did was break up the dot like a crosshair, this helped my visualize any constant errors I might have been doing. To my surprise, it helped.

So I went ahead and modified the dot drill target and added light lines quatering the dot. I didn't want the lines to add to the target. You're only supposed to see them when you're holding the target and studying it looking for clues of what you might be doing wrong.

Please let me know if you guys find this useful. I know it's not a huge change, but it helped me visualize things a little better.
I'll be more that happy to put the target up so you guys can download it. I'll just have to figure out how if the copy here doesn't work.

Re: Dot Drill modified target. Your thoughts??????

Not a bad post-drill tool. Nice.

When I'm shooting dots/groups, especially with a FFP scope (thick reticle) I put dial the scope off the POI just a touch so that I can set the crosshairs up on the dot at the 2 tangency points. Think of rolling a basketball up against the wall and looking at it from the side.

That's what I find helps me center punch dots or put together little groups with a field rifle. The group shot below was setup in a similar manner and fired 5 rounds off a bipod/rear bag at 100yd from my 6.5 Creedmoor. Edge to edge measured 0.41"

This case, I dialed 1/2 MOA out of the elevation and used the crossing of the lines on the target, but the concept is similar.

Thats how i do it most of the time. Good analogy with the basketball and wall.

Can you clarify what you mean? Do you mean you instead if aiming at the center, you put one 1/4moa click into it and aim at the very top of the dot?

Re: Dot Drill modified target. Your thoughts??????

Although not an issue with the one shot/dot format of the dot drill, the tangent approach also helps prevent losing your aiming point (dot) when shooting groups, due to multiple hits obliterating the dot.

Re: Dot Drill modified target. Your thoughts??????

I recently picked up similar concept from a fella at a local 600yd BR match. He gets zeroed and then takes enough elevation out to equal the radius of the circular target. This way, he can rest the target ontop of the horizontal crosshair and use the vertical crosshair to split the circle down the middle so he can a) be sure he is centered on the target and b) be sure that his rifle is not canted. Also, as mentioned with bohem's method, it is easier to attain the same POA than when trying to quarter the target.

Re: Dot Drill modified target. Your thoughts??????

Good info...it makes sense and I always feel like I am not getting the same point of aim when trying to quarter the dots. The lines would on the dots would be helpful when analyzing my performance too.

Re: Dot Drill modified target. Your thoughts??????

The eye will both naturally balance and center things. The so called aids to good shooting earlier posted here with delineations of some sort are all distractions. They are not needed; plus, they thwart picture memory development.

I agree with 427 you need to learn to level you ret without the line's .

Re: Dot Drill modified target. Your thoughts??????

Quartering a target is a means to record, or analyse multiple hits. It is usually an effective technique for refining a zero from the standing position, or for measuring overall position building development.

Re: Dot Drill modified target. Your thoughts??????

i tried a similar dot drill. I have to admit I do not shoot as much as i want or need. A little frustrated to say the least. My Lr308 was not on like i thought it was. the first 10 shots were off the target could not figure out where i was shooting. Not FUN. I am not sure if i am unhappy with my build. Especially the rings. The scope seems to be right of center thus the windage knob is favoring the left side of the dial. what are you thoughts. Any ways here is my target.

Re: Dot Drill modified target. Your thoughts??????

it seems the windage knob does not sit mid way between extream left and extream right. the indication favors the left side. When aim at the target it seems the ferticle cross hair are just to the right of center (eye balling of course) from the reciever rail.
