I recenlty read on another forum a post that was written by a man that stated to work for a barrel manufacturer. I have never heard this before. This is his quote.

"I stay away from the double based powders like the 500 series. The double base powders are harder on the barrels and will wear the throat faster.

Later, Frank
Bartlein Barrels"

Can anyone either confirm or deny this?

Re: double based powders

Double based powers have a portion of the powder nitroglycerin as well as nitrocelluose. By history, they do burn hotter. Enough to cause concern on barrel life? Go to an expert. Such as a barrel manufacturer. JMHO

Re: double based powders

Yes...and that's why ball powder is formulated with extra flame retardants to reduce burning temps. Some ball powders are better in this regard than others, but this is largely a non-issue, and anyway, barrels are cheaper than the cost of the ammo it takes to wear one out.

The reason I prefer single based powders is because they are more resistant to temp variations.
