Hey guys, need some advice here. Aside from a custom bolt action, I'm also in the market for an AR style production rifle.

I've been looking at the LRT SASS From DPMS or the LAR 8 From RRA .

Anyone have any experience with either of the two? I realize that the DPMS is more expensive the the RRA but is it worth the extra money?

Thanks guys.

Chris

Anyone? I'd like a rifle of this type for medium range use, nothing further than 600 yards. I was going with either a 4 or 5x as far as the glass goes.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Re: DPMS or RRA

One thing to remember about the DPMS rifles in New York State is that magazines over ten rounds are not legal here unless they're made prior to 1994. NY has their own version of the AWB written into penal law that almost copies the federal 1994 AWB to the letter. New York's did not sunset in 2004. The Rock River Arms rifle use FN FAL mags for which there is a good supply of old pre-ban mags floating around. Armalite AR10's can use their gen1 mags which are built off of old pre-ban m14 mags. Armalite current gen2 mags are not legal here in NY. This state isn't much better than Komifornia.

It's not one of the choices but thank you for the suggestion.

Re: DPMS or RRA

I should have paid closer attention to your state of residence.

Badshot308 makes a good point about mags. I usually recomend DPMS pattern guns because the KAC/DPMS pattern is becoming the standard.

Armalite makes good guns. Their older mags are a bit expensive and you'll have to search around a bit for them.

The RRA is just the old Bushmaster .308 that they gave up on because the design had some issues (the big one that comes to mind was bolt sheering). I'm sure RRA has attempted to fix this problem (which is why there was a long break between when they bought the rights to when they finally went into production) but I havn't heard much on them so I don't know how they're doing now.

Thanks guys, I wasn't aware of the magazine issue but I am now. Setting the legality of the mags aside how do the rifles fare up?

Starvin, you bring some good info to light about the RRA that otherwise I wouldn't have known.

Between the USMC and my present gig, I've been around weapons of all kinds my whole life. I'm surprised at how much I DON'T know. Thanks again for the info/help.

Re: DPMS or RRA

Armalite vs DPMS is like Ford vs Chevy. Both are good guns. The local gun store usually has more DPMS rifles in stock but their hi-cap 308 mags are in the law enforcement only counter. Don't know much about the RRA 308 rifles. I don't think there are many out in the field yet.
