Perhaps this has already been asked and answered but I could find anything using the Google search.

So, do you guys know if DTA is doing a 223 conversion or if anyone else is going to do it? It sure would be handy as a trainer.

Thanks

Re: DTA 223 conversion?!?

Not yet. And because it would require a different bolt, you'll have to wait for DTA to make one. Mark from SAC has mentioned his interest in doing this for .300BLK, IIRC, which would make a .223 conversion rather trivial. But like I said, it would require a new bolt design (not to mention magazine as well!), which is something no 3rd party has done yet as far as I know.

Re: DTA 223 conversion?!?

I would imagine a new (223 specific) barrel extension design matched to a new bolt would go a long way towards fixing the issues inherit in getting a gun designed to feed 338 LM to feed a tiny little 223. But that's not exactly trivial.

Same here if I had a .223 for my DTA there goes the need for the rest of my collection!

I do a lot of traveling and it would be super convenient to have 1 DTA with a .223, a .308, and a .338 conversion. That would cover all my bases including inexpensive training.

Mark, you are working on the complete package - bolt, barrel+extension, magazine? Correct? I'm glad you're doing it!

And since the bolt would be specific for this class of cartridges (call it "223 bolt-face"

), getting a replacement barrel for this caliber would be the same as for other SRS calibers - you can reuse the old extension...? I wonder whether the "custom" extension cost would be higher than DTA's standard one...

Re: DTA 223 conversion?!?

Exciting news.

I test fired the first ever .223 DTA Conversion on Friday. It shot great, and is showing lots of promise. It is feeding from a magazine just fine and everything is working like it should. Since I had to make the magazine from scratch, it could use a couple revisions, but it is working out! Here is some more info.

If all goes well, we are planning on offering a .223 and possibly a 300 Blackout package that will include...

- Our custom bolt with a 223 bolt face.
- Either our own custom barrel extension (not sure if we will keep using DTA's or not.
- Our injection molded or possibly CNC Billet magazine set up for 223/300 Blkout.

Price has not been determined just yet because we still have lots of variables ahead with getting possibly 3 custom parts manufactured. Bottom line is we are hoping to keep the price around the same as most other conversions. I will keep you posted.

I know the .308 bolt will work for the 22-250, but I think feeding is going to be an issue with the caliber. I tried to test functionality by cycling some 22-250 in my .308 conversion and I was experiencing a significant amount of jamming. The nose of the bullets were getting jammed in the barrel extension.

I'm making some changes to the magazine. I have some mag prototypes getting machined as we speak.

I'm also shopping around for a local shop to make our own bolt and extensions. the problem with the DTA is it has two rows of lugs, which means that the bolt nose has to travel a long distance from the start of the extension to where it ends up. Bottom line, this means that its more difficult for the .223 to make it from the magazine, and travel over an inch to the chamber. We are shortening the extension and bolt to make this more reliable.

This is going to take a little more time to get the new bolt prototyped and rolling.

Re: DTA 223 conversion?!?

Bachelor Jack that was my request a long time ago was for DTA to make a .223/.22LR trainer in a lighter package with same technology. For me I don't need an HTI but the trainer would be a must buy.

We would be offering the barrels with a Gen 2 extension. Reason being is that our barrels can be used in either chassis. We do not use the extension to prevent the barrel from rotating. Our locking cut does that. This allows us to use our barrels in either chassis system with the Gen 2/Revision 2.

Magazines are currently being prototyped by an individual who is more capable than I am of making the first run of mags. He is most likely sending me the first run in a week or two for testing. Revisions will be made, then we will push forward into production.

Mark, excellent work, cant wait till they are ready, I'd love to try one of these.

Re: DTA 223 conversion?!?

From the DTA forum last month:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">We have a working/firing/feeing/extracting/ejecting prototype, we will call this our Rev 1 223. We are working on a new Rev 2 223 conversion that is doing everything Rev 1 223 conversion did, but better. The Rev 2 conversion is not a firing version at this point however. We are getting some made up in the next week that I will be able to fire and I will post some videos shortly. We also have a few high capacity magazines that we are working on at the same time.

For the 300 Blackout. I'm having trouble making it work 100% of the time due to the short nature of this round. Short 40 gr 223 rounds feed great and the longer match bullets (69-80gr) feed even better.
