I've have had a savage model 10fp for some time now and I really haven't shot it much. Reasons being I hated the trigger and the stock. Well I bought a new trigger and now im debating if I should get a mcmillan stock. The one I want is over 600 bux. Its got me wondering... should I put all this coin in to a savage or should I just save up for my 7mm saum dream stick? I don't have a lot of experiance shooting LR so should I just get the stock and work on fundamentals?

Re: dumping money in a savage

SELL it to me and i will put on a choate stock and shoot the shit out of it like my other savages

Re: dumping money in a savage

can you convert this action to your dream caliber? if so, but the stock, shoot the 308, sell it off and convert. or buy a stevens action you can put in the same stock in your dream caliber. you will find plenty of guys shooting savage/stevens and plenty to say its junk. you will have to start all over if nothing else. you will go from a working rifle you can shoot to ??

Re: dumping money in a savage

Get the stock and get fundimentals and wind drift down. After you go and do well at a couple competitions or are confident hitting at over 500 then consider the upgrade.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: dumping money in a savage

That Savage will do all you want, and it's more capable than 95% of the guys pulling the trigger. If you want to unload it, post it on the EE on this site I bet it will be gone under an hour.Either way good luck on your build!

Re: dumping money in a savage

I wish Savage arms would at least send me a free cap as much as I promote them. I shoot a model 10 in .308, a model 12 in .22-250 and a MK II .22lr.

In March I called McMillan and ordered an A-5, for my .308, and never though twice about the fact that I'll be dropping a Savage action in it. Anyone that says a Savage won't shoot lights out hasn't owned one, or hasn't been around someone shooting one in the last 5 years. I've got witnesses to the capability of a Savage rifle. Any misses I had were more my fault than the rifle's.

Re: dumping money in a savage

Yep...Savages shoot! Kinda like a chrysler though...only difference is a Savage works!

If I was in your shoes (and I was), i would buy a Bell/Carlson stock that's basically a knockoff of the Mcmillan A3. Very nice upgrade and only $200. Definitely plenty of kit to learn to shoot with. I recently upgraded to an FN A3G, which is a very fine rifle, but honestly, its no more accurate than my Savage.

+1 I was shooting in Adairsville, GA one Saturday when a guy from Cobb County pulls up in a new Ranger Rover wearing a "Hunt Africa" tshirt. He proceeded to tell me that he was a lawyer and had just gotten three custom built Weatherbys from a guy in south GA. He was leaving for Africa the following Monday. He had a ton of gear that took 20 minutes to set up. All glass was Swarovski including the spotting scope. Wind was gusting to about 15 and I'm shooting well under an inch at 100 and he's at about 6". Man, he got red in a hurry. And started yelling, "What in the hell is wrong with these guns!?" I said, "It could be the the wind." He looked at me with the devil in his eyes and yelled, "That damn Savage isn't having any problems with the wind!"

So yeah, keep the Savage.

Re: dumping money in a savage

Keep it, restock it, shoot the hell out of it.

I'm going to have a custom build on a Savage action when I outgrow my FCP, didn't think twice about spending money on the action. I just haven't outgrown it yet, tho.

Re: dumping money in a savage

Go with the Savage. I'm starting with a Stevens 200 in .308, and even after upgrading the shit out of it (including completely trivial upgrades that basically I just want and don't contribute to function), I'll only be at about $1600 (excluding optics). Not too bad.

Re: dumping money in a savage

Stay with the Savage. That Savage will shot better than most. Possibly consider a lower cost stock if have to have something else. Keep the original parts around just in case for later. The $200 knock off A3 stock above sounds interesting. Did you get a Timney or another trigger?

Would not modify it too much - unless needs. Shoot it. Every rifle has favorite ammo. Find it, hand loading helps. Most peoples skills never pass that rifle. When do any changes try to do it one at a time and shoot again. The 10 FCP I've been behind is under MOA - inside a dime at 100yds. One of the most accurate rifles I've ever shot.

When limit modifications can have a good return if ever sell to get something else. Those who add specific modifications limit their market to only specific people when they resell.

Re: dumping money in a savage

Right now I am waiting patiently for my Manners MCS-T to arrive. I will be dropping my 10PC action into it, and it will be ON!!

My 10FPLE that I had to sell was a laser beam of a shooter. That rifle has been the most accurate rifle I have ever owned or shot. I have owned plenty, including a FN-SPR that cost more for just the rifle than I had in my whole setup with the 10FPLE.

Keep it, shoot it, upgrade as you see fit, and LOVE IT!!

I have to agree.

Re: dumping money in a savage

I think folks get hung up on the costs of things.

My cost hangup is mostly about paying less for a similar capability. To my thinking, the Savage action fits this approach pretty well.

Rather than thinking an expensive stock, etc., demands an expensive action; I consider the issue on the basis of each component independently, and how much is reasonable to spend for that specific component. The same for each of the other components. Seen from this angle, the key factors related to the Savage action do not suggest price as the determining factor in its consideration.

My Savage 10FP action has been combined with a McM A3 stock, very nicely pillar bedded at the factory. May be pricey, but as stocks go, the price is very appropriate.

Th action has been upgraded with a SSS trigger and recoil lug.

The barrel is an L-W .260 Rem, again, well worth its cost.

Scope mount is a Ken Farrel 20MOA sloped single piece base, with Burris Signature 'Zee' rings.

I use comparatively cheap optics, but the system performance does not appear to suffer in the bargain. I'd spend more if I had more, but the current setup works quite well enough for my needs. I like Weaver and Tasco optics, and so far, they seem to like me too.

Exactly my thoughts. The last two I put together were idendtical 6.5 Lapua's, just different stocks. Both cost around $1250 with optics. I got in on the closeout prices on the 6.5x20 Viper's with standard duplex for $250. Both will shoot under .5 moa. I got into the long range steel game last year and I could not be happier with my Savages. My other is a 6br. All were built on the standard 110 action. It does make you feel good when you can shoot right with the guys that have thousands more in their rigs. All admith though, if I had the money, I would try a fully custom rig.

I've got the B&C and Choate tactical. My next will be a Choate. Both are nice, but I like the feel of the choate and don't care for the forend on the B&C. Both can be bedded easily and I recommend bedding.
