Just finished duracoating my revolver. Its only been two days but the paint seems still a little soft. I was thinking about ordering some Duracoat clear to spray over it to help protect the finish. Is it too late? Also, do most of yall spray the matte clear over your barreled actions after you finsih painting?

Re: Duracoat Clear

I'm not a duracoater myself, but my gunsmith does a ton of it and has been through the Lauer course. He told me that clear coats need to be applied immediately following the initial application. Also, as mentioned above it takes a while for duracoat to fully cure. If you can bear with putting it on the shelf/in the safe for a couple of weeks you'll be much better off for doing so.

Re: Duracoat Clear

If you think about it...applying a wet coat over the top of a coat that is trying to cure, seems like a bad idea. All it will do is prevent the lower layers from curing properly. Sounds like a great way to get flaking.

Re: Duracoat Clear

You can handle duracoat a few hours after application without worries. Just don't overdo it. You can apply clear coat anytime you please. But duracoat is not my first choice for metal. If you are using it on metal, you absolutely need to blast it first. But I would go with cerakote on metal if given the option.

Re: Duracoat Clear

did you use a uv hardener by chance? this can delay the dry time up to 2 days(air cure) depending on the base color applied. Clear can be apllied after the initial hour and up to 7 days after the base coat without scuffing. Be cafeful when applying the clear as it will run all over the place if sprayed too thick. most colors don't require a clear so if tolerances allow i would use the same color for the second coat. Duracoat isn't the best out but it beats the hell out of any factory finish. Most of my customers don't want to spend the extra for Cerakote. In all reality most shooters are after the look and low maintence Duracoat offers. But there are a select few that have deep pockets and must have the best out. For them i recommend Cerakote,

Re: Duracoat Clear

First of all as a duracoat finisher it is fine to do a clear coat up to a week after. I bake everything but even with that I wait a week before any serious use. It takes about a month for it to be hard enough for field use. The main thing with any finish is prep. Did you sand anything (Bead Blast) or any prep?
I have had duracoat look new on guns as old as six years so its all about prep and not doing it to thick. Let us know what you do.
