Hey guys I'm looking at purchasing a Surgeon 591. It was built back in 2008. Do the early production surgeon action have any 'downfalls' in comparison to the ones being produced now? Serial on the action starts with B01xxx

I have an early hundreds serial # Surgeon 591.
Had to mill out a small relief cut in the center of the feed ramp for long c.o.a.l. rounds to clear from a DBM. That relief cut was later standardized on the more recent Surgeon actions. Also, mine has the original round bolt shroud and 1st gen KMW bolt knob. Other than those points, I believe they are the same as the current actions. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another!

    Make sure it ejects properly.

Some of them did not have a large enough ejection port, and when the extractor released the empty case it would hit the inside edge of the port, spin around and land back inside the action.

Have a look at the thread here on bolt gun reliability from a few years ago.

I have one of the B serial numbered actions, says Tactical on the front ejection port side of the action. It was trued by GAP as part of a full build into what is essentially spec'd like a Hospitaller--shoots great and have had zero issues with the gun for the few hundred rounds I have through it.

    Exactly.

I have had 2- 591 and 2- XL of about that vintage also and one of the XL rifles has a s/n lower than 80. No problems other than on one of the 591 actions I had to replace a bad bolt stop, no big deal. Surgeon sent me a replacement part and had it changed out two days after I called them. the XL's are 338 LM and the 591's are/were 7wsm's, now one is a 6.5 4S. I think Surgeon actions are awesome no matter what the s/n is.

There was a change to the bolt raceway where an anti bind rail was added to the right. It happened at the time I ordered mine from them, so m0y action was delayed a little, then I got the new style. From their website (action wrench section):

    Attention!!!
Do not attempt to use a 1st generation Surgeon Action Wrench
on a Surgeon action with the new anti-bind rail in the right side raceway!!!!!
Only use the 2nd generation action wrench with the Roman numeral II like the one pictured here.
You can send in your old wrench and we will modify it to work at no charge, only the cost of shipping.

One of my rifles has an early Surgeon 591, round bolt shroud, etc.

Moon (he was at GAP then) set it up and I have not had any issues/problems whatsoever.

I had a 581 and kick myself in the nuts everytime I think about how I sold it. Remember, a Surgeon is a Surgeon. They are the standard that all others are measured against. Yes Templar, Defience, even TRGs, & Sakos are great actions but everybody will always compare them to a Surgeon. (Just like S&B for glass)
