Let's say more classical times like 1800s or whatever or early 1900s when such a thing like the ships sinking was an issue.
Let's say you are married, a bit older and have some kids, and as normal the man is the primary and only breadwinner in the family and as normal there is none of this insurance or welfare or suing for compensation thing that everybody has today. Let's also say you are of the lower working class which doesn't have much in the way of money or property.
So lets say the boat goes down and you've made sure the kids are on the lifeboat.
If you send the wife off, well sure she and the kids survive, probably living off charity and in penury and drudgery most of their lives and unlikely that anyone would want to marry an older non-breeding age woman with children to support.
You take the lifeboat, you can give the kids a much better life, provide for them, give them a decent living and start to adulthood, and probably get them a new mother if you so wish.
In that case, what is actually best for the children?
Now today the case is much different, women can essentially use the government as their husband and provider (which many do or many more unconsciously vote for a government that promises to be just such), there is also often insurance, and generous welfare as well as lots of lawyers able to sue for payouts and compensation, so then it skews things.
There is ZERO chance the clock will ever be turned back, so it's best for men to demand equality and equal treatment since women will offer ZERO concessions to men for any supposed "deference" to women. Like it or not, society has changed permanently and it's time to stop thinking like it's 100+ years ago, those times are never coming back. It's only actually getting worse.
So you can be a slave with a false sense of virtue and smugness or you can be free man with their own agency and destiny, fully ready to treat women as equals but not betters and do what is in your best interest just as women almost always will do what is in their own best interest.
