Well my 260 Rem 700 failed me again during a match, and this time it cost me some cash. I have a rem 700 with benchmark barrel, PTG coned bolt face with Sako extractor running in an AICS chassis and AI mags. I am having failure to eject issues and the bolt/action is leaving fired cases in the action. The ejector seems fine with no issues plunging and has good stiffness. The tension of the Sako extractor on the other hand seems a little soft. When I cycle the bolt S L O W L Y, everything seems fine, but if I shoulder the rifle and run it relatively hard, that's when the problems occur. This is the first rifle I've had with that extractor so I'm looking for some experienced folks to chime in.

I've taken the extractor out and cleaned it, it has plenty of room to grab the rim of the case. My untrained eyes can't find the issue, but I did notice a bur on the pin that holds the extractor, so I filed that burr off and cycled 5 loaded rounds, of which, one failed to eject. I've tried 3 AI mags and 1 Alpha with no differences. I've included a few pictures just in case someone sees something out of the norm. I'm going to order a new extractor with pin/spring as soon as I hit SUBMIT, I need a spare anyway.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Ejection/Extraction Problem Rem 700, PTG bolt

This is probably just a shot in the dark but here goes. I have worked on peoples rifles before that had the scope as low to the barrel as possible, and the scope had a large windage knob, there wasn't enough room to allow the brass to fly free without hitting the knob every time, so every so often while working the bolt at a fast pace the brass would fly out, hit the knob and bounce back into the port. I know, but, when you work the bolt slowly the brass doesn't have the same inertia so it isn't thrown up and out as hard. A good way to know is look at the bottom of your windage knob, is it scratched up or have marks on it from the brass? Just an idea, check it out.

It's hard to see in the pics but, is the face of the ejector plunger even or close to even with the inside edge/lip of the extractor claw. if this is the case, and it sounds and looks as if it may be, the ejector plunger isn’t applying enough forward pressure to the case head resulting in your extractor releasing the case too soon. If this is the case, the fix is a very simple one.

I had the same rings/scope on my Crusader and never had an issue. Is this because the Sako extractor angles the brass upwards when it ejects?

Now what? Order a smaller cap from USO without the scallops? Higher rings.. Yuck!

Thanks guys for the assist, I seldom dial any wind and just hadn't noticed the marks since I mounted this scope/rings on this rifle.

try taking the top corner off of the extractor claw with a grinder or file. I have done this on some of the wsm actions with an m-16 extractor. This lets the case pull more out to the side instead of trying to eject at 1 o'clock. Maybe this will let the cases clear the windage knob.

It's the top picture which shows the windage knob.

I've got a #1 regular knob to try If that doesn't fix it, I'll try your suggestion, it makes sense. Thank you.

Re: Ejection/Extraction Problem Rem 700, PTG bolt

I had the problem of the brass hitting my scope turret then going back in with a factory extractor. Keith lengthened my ejection port so the brass had a chance to get out sooner, haven't had that happen since.
