Hello, so here's the question. Does anybody know about elko county nevada. I see large plots of land out there for sale at low prices. What I can get from it is lots of open land. Scrub brush, gets cold in the winter and hot during the summer. Does anyone have experience with the area, is hunting good out there, how is the economy, I'm a mechanic and possibly looking to move and live there or is it more of a great getaway? I guess any opinions or details would be appreciated.

I would not call Elko a "get-a-away" destination. Elko is doing VERY well with all of the mining that is going on. Large plots of land are available, yes, but it is usable? You have to consider the expense of water and electricity. It is likely you would have to heat the home via propane gas or electricity. It is somewhat high desert so it is not that hot. Winters are pretty cold, depending on what you consider cold.

The locals there are very conservative, hunting and off-loading is very popular. The hunting is good, but that is subjective. Think hunting via side-by-side to cover greater ground. Getting a tag will take a while given the lottery system we have here with the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

Any other questions, let me know. I do not live there, but cover that territory and am familiar with the people and the places.

Pretty much what Neil said. The Crime in Elko is getting outrageous. We had 2 murders last month alone.
The Friday before Memorial day someone stole my Quad trailer I found it in the thief yard and they claimed they didn't know how it got there.

Last two winters around January it was 22 below for a month.

Hunting here is good but everyone and their grandmother comes to Elko to hunt.

Believe me the reason why there are large tracks of land is because it is not profitable to own it. There are hundreds of people thinking the same thing you are.
