I'm looking into getting some custom engraving done on my barrel. However, my barrel is blued and I know they use that to prevent it from rusting. The engraving will then expose the steel of the barrel. Do I have anything to worry about here? If I have it engraved, is there anything I should use on it for after care?

Re: Engraving Barrel

Personally, I feel money spent can be used in better ways.
If you are going to build a 17, then go ahead.
limitations should be known.

Reaching a little farther out m,ight take something a little bigger.

Don't really care on looks, and engraving adds nothing.

Re: Engraving Barrel

Engraving.....Isn't that better left to the ultra high dollar English guns like those from H & H? Engraving and Inlaying look nice in there right place, but I cannot imagine what on Earth would posses someone to do that on a tactical or hunting rifle. Black guns and engraving go together like water and oil!
Seriously, I think you're in the wrong sport. You would expect that on a fine hand built $80,000.00 double, but on a black gun or Tactical weapon? I suppose it's your money and your weapon, but I think it would be as tacky as curb feelers.

Re: Engraving Barrel

there is nothing wrong with wanting to engrave something, whether it be text or a design. that is cosmetic and totally up to you. it is not going to hurt anything. if you keep it oiled after it is engraved, like you should with a blued finish, i think it will most likely stay rust free.

and what if he wants a simple text engraved? is that some kind of a sin?

Re: Engraving Barrel

Engrave it and then paint the engraving in gold or silver or something like that, this would solve your worry of rust. Paint the engraving and wipe off the excess leaving just the engraving to stand out in a different colour.

Re: Engraving Barrel

Forster has silver and gold to be inlayed into engraving i would look at the silver as it is not as wanky as gold. If you want it done do it it is your rifle check your forster products and there gunsmithing section for the silver paint inlay.

Re: Engraving Barrel

Clear coat would work, but you should do the entire piece for uniformity... unless you're REALLY good with masking tape.

I wouldn't leave it exposed.
You could probably get by with a cold blue after the metal is exposed and cleaned up.

Whoever does the work could make additional recommendations.

Re: Engraving Barrel

^ It's just flamers man. No biggie. They have nothing better to do than run their mouths and get their panties all twisted up. I'm in the wrong sport because I want my Marlin stamp engraved????? I think it's the other way around....

Re: Engraving Barrel

Freakin sick pics man. Nice!

And I'm sorry, but I have to say...there are only 2 things required in this sport. Have fun, and do it safely. Other than that..let people do whatever they wanna do. Whatever makes them happy. It's their money. It's their rifle. So who cares??? As long as someone is loving what they do I say kick @ss to them. I only hate to see flamers because it's THEM that are in the wrong sport. Their posts discourage people all around the entire world from shooting. They inhibit possible new members from joining the board. People all over are sticking up to the government for the right to do what we enjoy most. I love to see the sport of shooting grow, but they kill that growth understanding of nice and safe shooting, and the hard work that many people have done for us to even do this at all. It's just really such a shame. Peace out.

Re: Engraving Barrel

I was watching how they make them at Brownells. I have all the tools to do it and it doesn't really look too hard, but no stainless bolt. Might do it on the stainless bolt head. I guess that might look kinda nice.

Re: Engraving Barrel

Take the receiver and barrel to a good trophy shop and they can put pretty much anything you want on it.

When they are done, just cold blue it.

Simple and effective

i do want to try something tricky with the 4th axis one of these days. i don't have the skills to do it on a tapered section of barrel though. </div></div>

Robert,

Gimme something your after, I can program it. Just gotta have the software to project onto a tapered cylinder. -and know your computer geometry is an accurate representation of your actual part (that's the hard part)

I did a BR gun in a POW/MIA theme once where I engraved barbed wire flames down the length of the barrel. A mother biche to program since MCX didn't exist back then but I got it figured eventually.

All I need is a JPEG and something of known size for scale and I can rastorize it right in to my puter and spit code out to the machine.

Cool stuff. You saw the buttplate for the BR gun I did right?
