Hey guys. I took my ASVAB and physical yesterday and today. Im joining the Corps. I got a 97 on my ASVAB with a 149 MM!! I am going to be a MOS 2111 and hopefully get into the 2112 program as soon as I become a Corporal. I have college credits so I will be coming out of boot as a PFC and if I can recruit 2 people to the Corps I will graduate boot as a Lance Corporal. Do any of you current or former Marines have any advice for me? Anything I should try for? Things yall would have done differently? I should be leaving for boot at San Diego in August, maybe a little earlier if a spot opens up.

Re: Enlisting

Congratulations! You will like San Diego. Run a lot, do a lot of squat thrusts, run some more 3 mile runs will do you well. I so remember those in the sand at Pendleton. Last but not least do not give up you can make it.

Re: Enlisting

No advice to give, I broke a long family history of service to our country, something I have come to greatly regret doing, infact, my only regret.

Thank you for your future service to our country. Nice job on the asvab!

Re: Enlisting

Run a lot. Run until you puke. Spit a few times and run some more. Being in good physical shape is a plus in basic training of any of the branches. The Marines especially.

Re: Enlisting

and lots and lots of pushups, and then run some more, run hills, run in sand, run steps and then lots and lots more pushups.

Re: Enlisting

Run 6 miles and you will be good. Run 6 miles and do pushups bends and mofo's etc every 1/4 mile, and you will remember what you did when you get to the S&M course(Strength and Endurance Course back in the day). When you get there, keep your mouth shut when it's supposed to be shut, eyes open when they are supposed to be open, and do everything you are supposed to with vigor and gusto. Most of all, whenever you look a DI in the eyes, make sure he sees a pair of eyes that will not be broken no matter how hard they are pushed, no matter how long they are awake, no matter how hard they are smoked.
If you learn something better than everyone else, share the knowledge when you can. If you do stuff better than a few, help them get to your level. It's about Esprit de Corps, Initiative, and Leadership that comes from being the lowest piece of excrement on the face of God's Green Earth because no matter how hard you wish it, You are still a lowly maggot until you earn the Title Marine. That day, and only that day will I call you Brother and welcome you to The Corps. Now get your fingers out of Sally Rotten Crotch and get to pushin!

Re: Enlisting

I see a trend toward running.... LOL. I am running and still loosing some weight. I have a couple hundred acres available to me to run on with some hills and creeks and gullys so I can use that to my advantage. am doing push-ups and sit-ups and pull-ups every time I think about it, usually once or twice a day. Thanks for the advise guys.

Semper Fi!

Hoorah SIR!!!

Just did some push-ups for ya. Thank you for the advise, I was hoping you would chime in.

P.S: What are mofo's sir?

Re: Enlisting

I think mofo's are what us older Marines called squat thrusts. Start in the upright position in one movement go to the "up" push-up position then to the squatting position then back to the standing position. They are really easy to do. (laughing)

Re: Enlisting

If you graduate a PFC or L/Cpl, expect a little grief when you get to your school. Most privates will think your an ass-kisser.
When qualifying with your M-16, forget all you know about shooting and listen/learn from your PMIs'. An Expert badge is preferable to a pizza box anyday. Just 'cause your not gonna be a grunt don't mean you shouldn't know how to shoot. (Every Marine's a Rifleman!) Lastly, run your ass off like everyone has been saying.
Good Luck.

Re: Enlisting

Shoot. With a college degree and 5 yrs prior service they wouldn't even give me PFC out of boot. rofl. You leave there as an L/Cpl and you better have your shit screwed on straight!

Re: Enlisting

I am a 2111 1984-1990.I went to ABERDEEN PROVING GROUNDS
for MOS training.yes a ARMY base. a DETACHMENT.
First thing get everything in writing in your contract
if it not in there.you dont got shit coming.when I was
getting out we had contract CPL after 6 months.2111 is a small
mos. so promotions take a while 3 years for me to make E-4.
Get your mind right before BOOTCAMP,you have to be mental
strong. I hope it works for you SEMPER FI

Re: Enlisting

I know its kinda cheating to graduate boot as a Lance Corporal or even a PFC but I will be happy to have the rank and will serve it well.

Yes MOS school is at Aberdeen.

LegioX, why do you say forget everything I know about shooting the M16? I already shoot an AR-15 in NRA highpower and get a lotta help from a former Marine in my learning to shoot the rifle.

Re: Enlisting

Get some leg weights, arm weights and a back pack with some weight in it. Do 1 or 2 runs per week with the arm and leg weights. Start rucking (hiking) 1 or twice a week, start with 25lbs and work up to 45lbs. Take water, MP3 and get 5-10 miles. It will strengthen your joints, back and core.

Good luck!

Re: Enlisting

As a former recruiter, I implore you to ignore the above advice regarding putting weights on your limbs and going all out right away. Instead, develop a plan with your recruiter that will allow you to work up to doing such things so that you do not incur an injury prior to leaving for training. From what I saw of the Marine Recruiters who worked next door, they were very adept at this.

An injured recruit is a useless recruit, especially before you even get to training.

Re: Enlisting

Walking distances doesnt bother me at all. a couple times a month I take a rifle and handgun and walk my famlies property to the tune of 3-4 miles. I will make me some 10 pound sand bags and through them in my backpack and start taking them with me. Ill start doing double that. Distance at a normal pace isnt a problem for me, the 3 miles in 28 min is outta my reach currently, but I will have it down to 25 min before I leave for boot.

Agreed.

Load all the weight you want in a pack and walk with it... but, stay away from running/rucking with ankle weights. Wrist weights are no big deal but I wouldn't do that either.

Better off loading a ruck up with 30-40 pounds at first and learn to walk 4 miles in under an hour while carrying a sledgehammer in your hands... 15 minute miles. When you can do that, increase the weight and try to do it faster.

Re: Enlisting

Army here but like other have said start getting in shape now, running, push ups, sit ups, chin ups and some wieght lifting, also watch what you eat start laying off sodas and stuff like that if you drnk a lot of them.

Re: Enlisting

I quit soda and beer and all fryed food(except the occasional french fry I steal from my girlfriend) about 4 months ago. Ive lost nearly 40 pounds so far and will loose another 25 or so before I leave for boot. That will put me at about 190 pounds. I am doing the other things already. Thanks man.
