What's the effect on an engine designed to use DEF if you don't put DEF in it?
DEF is sprayed into the exhaust as part of the catalyst process. A factory ECU, when the tank goes empty( and other emissions related components) will put you in a fault mode, pull power, limit speed and eventually shut the engine down.

Its the EGR that causes issues in the engine as diesels are direct injection, the intake and valves get "sooted" up.

Yeah, I've had one of the first diesel VWs in the US in 1978 - a VW Rabbit, then an 81, then an 86. Missed a few years and got a...91, I believe. Then got out of diesels altogether when they went to low sulphur fuel and the fuel pumps started ragging out and then picked up a "13 a few years ago. The 13 wasn't as much fun as it had that tiptronic automatic AND I had to dump DEF in it. Man in those early diesels I used to get 51mpg on those standard shift VWs - loved those cars. Still looking to pick one up.

Can't tell you how many times my brother an I used to tear the motor down and change the timing belt. One time the timing belt broke ans we REALLY had to tear it down to see the damage the valves did to the piston heads when the belt broke. Ah, those were the days.
