I'm in the process of getting together gear for long range competition, including unknown distance.

RIFLE> HS Precision .300 Win Mag. Rem. action (curently owned)

ANGLE, SLOPE INDICATOR> Horus ASLI (currently owned)

LRF BINOS> Bushnell Fusion 1600 (currently owned)

SPOTTING SCOPE> Leupold 12X to 40X 60 mm (currently owned)

RIFLE SCOPE> (Currently an older 30 mm. tubed Burris 4X to 12X Black Diamond W/ Mil Dot reticle <span style="font-style: italic">but</span> MOA knobs.
Bushnell HDMR W/H59 reticle (wish list)

WEATHER METER/BALLISTIC CALCULATOR> Horus/Kestrel 4500NV(wish list)

The last item can wait a while as it is not absolutely necessary to get started.

I own a shooting jacket and all the gear necessary for precision reloading. I'm not new to reloading.
Other than practice and experience what additional <span style="font-weight: bold">gear</span> would be recommended, if any?

Cobra got my additions, I'll just emphasize this...

He said it with the HAWG, but some kind of hydration system, you stay hydrated or you're going to be in trouble.

Ditch the spotting scope, you won't need it. You already have that covered with the bushnell binos.

Maybe a lightweight tripod or shooting sticks if its a field course

Where & when is the match?
Sling is a must - TIS, Rifle only etc - and learn how to use it!
I take a small spares kit-(firing pin,extractor), torx bits/ small driver, leatherman.
Back pack w/shooting rest, aircrew type thin gloves, DEET, bug wipes (summer), lens cloths, lens pen, eye protection, ear pro ( 33db plugs), shemagh for shade, bonie hat, high cal snacks, write in the rain notepad, pens, small backup calculator, 3'x3' section of cordura fabric, dope card and ballistic calculator, large silicon rubber bands and a chamber flag-insert flag and keep bolt forward w/ a silicon rubber band. TP and a knife...
Don't clean your bore.
Lube the bolt and clean the bolt head.... and check the torques on your action and scope mounts...
Get plenty of sleep, eat well, and relax.
I'm sure ill think of more

I am assuming you already have a bipod on this rifle if not that would be a good addition.

Also some way to keep spare rounds easily accessible. Personally I use wrist band that has my dope inside it and 5 rounds stored in loops on the outside.

Thanks guys, Good suggestions.

1. <span style="font-weight: bold">SLING</span>> I have a competition leather sling & cuff but will use my Tactical Tailor sling until I see what works best from other competitors.

2.<span style="font-weight: bold"> PACK</span>> I have a backcountry ski pack - a Camelback Commander 3,000 cu. in./5 liter, camo hunting pack for all my gear. (As a backpacker I have more packs than weapons!)

3. <span style="font-weight: bold">GUN GEAR</span>> Yep, all good suggestions. I'll include them in the pack. From previous NRA course shooting I have an open chamber flag, and heavy canvas ground cover for muzzle blast. Pack has rifle rest attatched. (old knee-mount turkey hunting shotgun rest that works fine)

4. <span style="font-weight: bold">BIPOD</span>> I have one (with no external springs!)

5. <span style="font-weight: bold">REAR BAG</span>> I have a leather bench rest rear bag. Is that OK?

I can recommend this shooting drag bag, that also serves as a shooting mat with very nice padding.

Don't run out and buy a bunch of crap first,then start shooting. Go shoot some matches make do with what you currently have and observe all the other guys. You will see all the cool crap and take the opportunity to get a feel for what works for the way you operate. Watch what actually gets used and what is simply for the "Big Pee Pee" factor. Build your kit to fit your needs. I been shooting matches for quite a while and still cant find the perfect combination.

Pretty basic stuff:

Ammo
Pad of paper w/pen
Water
Crunchy Munchy bars
Shooting mat
Knee Pads
Elbow Pads
Kestrel
Android device w/app
Drop chart if the 2 above fail
More ammo
Hello Kitty pillow to weep on when I shoot for sh$t.

I need that hello kitty pillow more than I would like.

Jason k, and LonewolfUSMC have short little videos on what gear they have in their bag for a match and you'd be surprised how much stuff is NOT in there. Jason's video is geared toward's a novice shooting their first match. he even separated it into the need to have stuff and the nice to have but not necessary. If I knew how to link to them I would. I'll try but maybe some one else can help out in that dept.
I am shooting my first season of comps this year and those videos really helped me keep in perspective what I really needed vs. what my gear whore personality wanted to go buy.

Ear Muffs
Kestrel
Data on a Palm Pilot
in my Kreiga R25 motorcycle backpack.

I have since added some Kit(ten):

Thanks Graham, my daughter just saw that and asked if I wanted to use her Hello Kitty stuff next time I go out shooting. In the past she has put Hello Kitty band aids in my blow out kit. I can't wait to see what turns up next. Oh and by the way the band aids came in handy once.

I didn't go through all the recommendations. Lots of good ones, some repeated. So I'll throw an odd one out there.

A damn baby carriage from a thrift store.

One with the big wheels (if you can't find a big wheel one, you can easily modify them). There is even a guy online that sells these things, but they come heavily modded and are camo'd and don't so much resemble a carriage anymore.

DIY. Because they have the metal tube construction, it is easy to modify mounts to hold your rifle(s). They will carry all your stuff; the seat is a great place for a ruck, bag, toolbox, whatever. Most have a place underneath to store stuff too. Can't go wrong with a baby carriage. Your peers might laugh --but they won't for long when they see how well it works!

Think of it as a golf caddy bag for rifles that you can push. I wish I had this when I did a lot of KD and NM shooting. I had all the gear, but we were issued folding stools to keep it in (in the army anyways). Not bad, but the carriage would have had a place to put the tripod and Kowa, as well as the stick.

Good luck. I miss shooting competitively... May have to get back into it one day. I've been farting around doing my own thing for long enough anyway...

Even at Rifles Only, ask the Army guy who tried it... Taunts about him being 'Army strong', with Rangers and SF who (kindly) helped him to lift it over fence.

what I carry for matches like Raton sporting rifle, thunder beast team match , score high tactical rifle challage and del norte outback match.
some shooting sticks ( look at varmint al website to make your own)
mesh bag for empty brass
sunscreen
small piece 3"x3" of micro fiber towel ( cleans gun and mags easily in dusty conditions )
small tool kit with some rem oil, duct tape stuff like that but I keep it small and light
binoculars
laser range finder
kestrel
PDA with field firing solution or I phone with knights armerment and paper cards with drop
48 oz nalgen bottle or hyro flask
ammo in 20 rd boxs
extra mags
hill people gear back pack
snacks
small rear bag

keep the gear light and simple

Love your products, and own a bunch of them, but there's no need to haul a full book when ADC cards, certain pages and dope charts work...and are lighter and less bulky.

From the last 2 day match I shot... This is what I carried:

Rifle / Scope / Bipod / Can
3 mags in pouches on the pack

Pack:
2 flip top Right in Rain note books - never know who will need one..
2/3 pens
Dope cards for expected DA's
PDA with Ballistics
120 rds ammo/day in 30 round pouches
Rear Bag
Light Gloves
Wool cap that would cover my ears over my ball cap.. wind and cold
Extra ear plugs/aspirin/sm knife/chap stick
Kestral/wind meter/DA
Tripod strapped to pack-
Dump pouch on pack for brass/trash/ empty mags/place for stuff in a hurry
Glasses and Ears
Range Finder/Binos
Small tool/parts kit...used by many folks!
Small Digital camera

Go and shoot a couple of matches, you will figure out what YOU need and want. We are all a little different
Make friends, have good attitude and have fun...

- Smaller ruck with hydration
- Decent folder knife (you never know)
- If shooting off barricades, SOTech Skid Plate
- Quality rear bag that fits the positions you will be shooting in
- Surveying tape for a cheater wind read at both your position and the target (assuming they let you use it, which they probably wont, but get one anyways)
- Small pouch in your ruck to hold just the tools (think VERY minimalist here, no need to drag along a inch/lb ratchet that weighs 4 pounds) you need to re-tighten rings, action screws or any mission/match essential gear you may need to unfuck rather than having to quit.
- Toss in a few Tylenol/Excedrin/800mg Ibuprofin, whatever
- Otis cleaning kit for your caliber (just in case, no need to really clean at the match unless you're shooting a retarded amount of rounds)
- Data book w/ notepad
- Anything with Hello Kitty on it.

Tag. Good info, agree with the headache pills, and keeping hydrated and the piece of cloth not just to wipe the equipment but if you sweat like I do when it is hot and humid it is nice to have some cloth along. Also can be used to reduce dust from muzzle blast, to do field repairs on a clean surface, can even fold it up and use as a butt support. Like to find things that can be used for multiple purposes to reduce what I have to carry.
