I picked up a pound of this today to try behind 167 Scenars and 168 SMK's. I couldn't figure out the differences between their powders, but assumed that as the number went up, so did the burn rate. I gather that N540 is more temp insensitive than N140, but how does it compare to Varget? Does anyone have any feedback from experimenting with Vihtavuori powders, and how they compare to our more common American powders?

Re: Experience With N540

I have only used n550 and n560 so far. I find n550 slightly faster than h4350. By slightly I mean I use the same charge or no less than one grain different and achieve greater vel. Ex: .243 win 105 berger 40gr h4350 2950fps,40gr n550= 3050fps. .30-06 165gr sgk 59gr h4350=2900fps, 58gr n550=3000fps. My barrel temps. seem lower with n-powders. N560 seems to burn slower than h4831. As far temp senitivity I can't comment as I don't test for that. My understanding is n540 is very close to h4895. I have 8# of h4895 to use up first before testing n540. I hope I haven't confused your question.

Re: Experience With N540

I have used N540 with outstanding results. Burns about the same as rl15 but with fewer pressure signs when pushing 168-175 at 2700+ Also has excellent lot to lot consistency

Re: Experience With N540

I have used this powder to make a copy of the Talon Manufacturing 175 match ammo. It is very good powder. It is very accurate and as another said is very consistent from lot to lot. It's only downside I have seen is that it is a bit temperature sensitive.

N5xx == double base.

N1xx == single.
